Restaurants with only 1 high chair...

are annoying. We're having brunch with friends on Sunday and they just informed me that when they made the reservation, they were told the high chair is "first come, first serve." So, yeah, we may not be able to stay at that restaurant if we get there and the high chair is taken. Our friends don't seem to understand why this is a big deal.

(And FWIW, we won't have the stroller with us since we're traveling on the subway with DD in the Ergo to get to brunch.)

  • That sucks! What about a booster seat? Would she sit in one of those? Do you think they have more than one?

  • That is annoying. I have a nice story about that though. The coffee shop this morning only had one high chair and it was in use. I said, that's fine she can sit in my lap. She was doing fine. 5 min later the manager comes in from out of the rain with a high chair for us. He had borrowed it from the pancake restaurant next door. I thanked him twice. So sweet!

Perhaps. But I feel like if they only stock one high chair, they're not very kid friendly in general. I guess I should have added that I also find it annoying that my friends are more into brunching at a "hip" spot than in trying to be more accomodating of my new reality with a little one.

  • That sucks- it is frustrating when kid-less friends don't make any effort to accommodate the new family member!

We use this whenever we eat out, and it's definitely light enough and portable enough to take on the subway. It's a little expensive, but honestly it's one of my favorite baby purchases and absolutely worth it if you eat out regularly.

  • We (including DS) were invited to dinner for a friends birthday but they picked a restaurant that has NO highchairs or booster seats, which we didn't know until we got there. On top of that, we were 6 adults in a squishy booth and when DS was on our lap, he could reach everything on the table. DH and I took turns standing beside the table with DS so we could eat. Needless to say we left very frustrated at the restaurant and at how our friends are so far removed from our new lifestyle.

    Thanks for this idea!

  • We have the safety first brand I think. It was like $19.99 at BRU, but they sell similair ones at walmart, target, kmart, ect., and it works well for travel. Even has a travel strap so I wear it like a purse. A big ugly plastic purse. LOL

  • I've never had an experience with a restaurant that doesn't have (many) high chairs, but DH and I always bring DS's FP Booster Chair with us when we dine out.  It's ours so we know it's clean, plus DS is much more comfortable AND contained.

I had to look where you live- Minnesota- way nicer than NY and I live here!  I can't imagine any manager doing that here or any other restaurant letting someone borrow a high chair!

I just wanted to tell you that it's not really hard bringing a stroller on the subway.  Only a few stops have elevators but I carry our stroller everyday and someone always offers to help.  It's not as bad as you think it will be - so maybe you could do that instead of the ergo.

Another thing I sometimes do is put 2 chairs together.  It gives ds a little more room to sit and move around.  Although if it's a very hip place you're going, they probably won't have a lot of space and extra chairs!  GL

  • That is so annoying.  So far I think we've tried to eat out about 3 or 4 times and had to go find somewhere else because the only high chair(s) were taken.  Until it happened the first time it never occurred to me that could be a problem.  It is very frustrating!
    Peru!

  • Can LO sit on your lap?  We've had meals this way before and it's worked out fine.
