Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Well, I'll be damned...we might be off bottles.

DD just started taking to a sippy cup in the last couple months but would only drink water or juice/water combo out of it.  I've tried milk in the sippy numerous times but she wasn't having it.  She's been down to three bottles of milk a day for a while, plus she has a sippy of water throughout the day.

So today I was walking around Target drinking a strawberry/banana smoothie and DD was pitching a fit to drink some from the straw.  So I let her try it, she was all about it.

So I came home and needed to give DD her second bottle of milk for the day and decided to give a straw sippy a shot.  (I bought a straw sippy cup months ago but she hated it)  Alleluia!  She actually drank most of her milk from the straw.  I can't believe it.  I'm going to try it again later and see if it was a fluke.  I really hope it's not a fluke.  I'm flying back to Orlando next week and I really don't want to have to pack any bottles.

Wow, I can't believe I might be done with bottles.  No more hand washing them.  Yay!

  • Yay! DD loves the straw cups.

  • Yay! Straw sippies were what got us off of bottles too. They're great, minus all those damn parts!

  • yeah for katie!  what straw sippy do you use?  sam will drink from a normal straw no problem but the straw sippy I have is difficult for him.

I have this one but I'm going to buy different ones that hold more and don't have handles on the sides.

  • huh...that is what sam used, maybe I need to see if he has stronger sucking capability now!
  • Yay for Katie! That gives me hope that they give them up when they're ready. Crossing my fingers that the straw is the answer for you guys. Abs- I've heard the Take n Toss straw sippies are more like regular restaurant straws. Worth a try since they are so cheap.

I actually taught her how to drink out of a straw using a Caprisun.  I know it isn't the healthiest thing in the world but it worked.  She now knows how to drink out of a straw.  Before she would just put the straw in her mouth and not doing anything.

With the Caprisun, I would squeeze it very slowly so the liquid would come out in her mouth.  After several attempts she figured out how to suck on it by herself.

  • That's great.  Hopefully this is the real deal for you.

And if it is, would you mind sending your DD over to my house to have a little conversation with Ben.  He'll be 18 months on the 28th and still taking 3 bottles/day.  He refuses milk in a sippy, but will drink water in it all day.  He loooooooves his milk 'babas'.  Ugh.
