I don't think it really matters all that much. Our main goal was something not too expensive. We got a coil mattress from BRU...I think it was $60-70. A lot of people say that coil mattresses are heavy but I have never had an issue with this one.
Baby Bargains recommends foam, merely because it's lightweight to change cribsheets. An argument against foam is that it wears out, but the BB have never seen anyone have to replace a foam mattress.
Coil is just as good and arguably more durable, just heavier.
I tell you, I'd be LOST without Baby Bargains guiding me through baby gear. I'd probably end up using the "you get what you pay for" way of 'ensuring' quality, which with the baby industry, would add up quick!

We went with coil because after taking both down and sitting on them in the floor of the baby store, we realized that the foam seemed to bow up at the edges. Now granted the baby will weigh a fraction of what we weigh, it may not be an issue.
We are going with foam, mostly because I hate coil mattresses in general, and would like something lighter for sheet changes. Also Baby Bargains rated it really will.

Thanks! We're heading to register at BRU tomorrow and I realized I didn't have any clue what to choose. DH says I would be totally lost without the boards, and he is completely right.

I would go with the most firm mattress you can find. The one we got was double sided infant / toddler (I think infant was more firm) and also had something that prevents Staph infections.

This is what we did and we just registered yesterday. We were told at BRU to pick the most firm one. Ours ended up being a middle of the road coil.
We picked foil just because the one we got was rated the #1 mattress. I do love it though because I've been playing around with bedding and I must have taken the mattress out of the crib at least 10-15 times already, and I can't imagine doing that all the time with a heavy mattress. Even the light foam one has to be manipulated out.
We are getting foam based on the Baby Bargains recommendation. The book does say that BRU does not carry foam - so if you want to go with foam - you may need to look elsewhere. I believe their top pick was a brand called Colgate.
We are going to a speciality store next week to order our furniture/mattress so we'll see what they have there.
I think the main thing is that it needs to be firm!
