Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

School starts tomorrow!

Its thesis year and I'm scared!!! I'm afraid my advisor is going to yell at me for not reading enough over the past few months.

I start classes tomorrow, and will start teaching next week! As of right now, I have something like 75 freshmen at my disposal!

Re: School starts tomorrow!

  • Good luck!

On a related note, I was recently thinking about how much it annoyed me when people would ask me what I was taking in school and when I would tell them I was taking Linguistics, they'd inevitably say "Oh, what languages?" And then I'd have to go into the big explanation of linguistics and how you don't actually learn a bunch of different languages. I was a tour guide at the time, too, so I'd have to answer this question about 50 times a day. Does this happen to you?

  • OHHH YEAH. People automatically assume that because you are a linguist, you speak multiple languages and that is your job. UM no. I can study and analyze a language without knowing how to speak it. I do, incidentally, speak English Spanish and some Chinese, but it is not because of linguistics courses. It is a common misconception that I am addressing in my first lecture! I am also doing true/false about intelligence and child acquisition, animal language, oldest language, primitive vs. modern langauges, etc. Just a quick pretest to get the kiddies thinking about what it is that we do in linguistics. Oh and I'm asking them how many vowel sounds are in English :P that's always the best.
  • Sounds like fun! I want to be in your class!

Actually, come to think of it, I didn't really know what linguistics was until I took it. I took it because the linguistics department did TESL, which was what I was really interested in. I was so excited to be a language teacher and I often joked that I wanted to teach English because I like to correct people. Imagine my heartbreak when I learned how linguists felt about prescriptive grammar! I'm over it now, though Smile

I went through the same thing, but being a grammar snob helps out with syntax for sure!
