Bottle in the crib during the night?

Do any of you guys do this? I am getting a lot of "old school" advice since my DS is such a horrible sleeper. He is teething now (2 teeth breaking through). But he has always been a bad sleeper, so I don't know if its the teething that's bothering him or what. (Yes, we have tried everything, tablets, drops, tylenol, etc.)

Some of the ladies I work with and my mom have all told me to put a bottle in his crib and let him have it throughout the night. But...I thought formula was only good for 1 hour after he drinks some of it...or is that what the big bad forumla companies tell us just so we throw out formula and go buy more? lol

  • You're not supposed to do this.  It's terrible for their teeth.  Sorry.  We have sleep issues too, I wish there were an easy solution.

  • Not only does formula go bad quickly, but letting your LO have a bottle throughout the night is TERRIBLE for his teeth!!  If you want to have anything in his crib, I'd say some teething toys (like the water-filled ring things).

    This exactly.?

  • Huh, wow, didn't know it was bad for the teeth. Thanks for letting me know! I will definately not be doing that!
  • You should absolutely not do this. It is horrible for their teeth and is a choking hazard.

Exactly. It's one of the few things that pretty much everybody agrees on.?

  • Our pedi told us to try and avoid putting her to bed with a bottle in the crib, so she doesn't see it as a security object. I also throw away the bottle 1 hour after she starts it.
  • I would not put a bottle in his crib with him. ditto pp it is terrible for their teeth. Does a pacifier help? Usually I will feed him the bottle and when he falls asleep I take it out and slip in the pacifier. That works like a charm for us.

I do the same thing when I am putting him to bed but he always ends up spitting it out at some point and will cry for it if he can't seem to find it in his crib, so then we have to get up and find it for him.

  • It's also bad for their teeth.
  • ?DH had to have 4 teeth pulled when he was 3 years old b/c he was put to sleep with a bottle each night.

My LO has had HUGE sleep issues, but we just started ferber this week and have already seen incredible results. ?I never thought I could do CIO, but seeing how it's helping DD sleep better - it's worth it. ?

Try putting more than one.  DS usually has about 3 in his crib so he can find them in the night.  And he STTN 8-7:30.

It is a really bad idea to put bottles in the crib with the baby.  You don't want his little teeth to get bottle rot.  *gag*

  • DH had to have 4 cavities filled when he was about 5. MIL didn't know she couldn't put him to bed with a bottle.
