What not-too-expensive infant seat did you have?

BFF's stepsister is pg, and has nothing. No money, no job, no babydaddy, and no parents to help her out. She was homeless and headed to a shelter until her grandma let her stay there.

BFF & I are throwing her a shower, and I want to get her a necessity. I am planning on getting her a carseat if no one buys her the travel system. If someone does buy her a carseat, I will probably get her a crib, since I guess that's the next "most needed" item, right?

So if you could recommend your not too expensive infant seat, I would appreciate it. It needs to be a 5pt harness, and preferably under $100. (Ours was way over my budget, so not much help) I was leaning towards a Graco Snugride, but am open to any suggestions. TIA ladies!

  • we had the snugride. my dad bought it with the travel system so i have no idea what it is price wise, but we were happy with it. :)

  • I don't have a good rec. for an infant seat (We had the Chicco) but I will suggest looking into Ikea for a crib. We don't have one but I know people who do and they are great, and they save on space. It's funny how it's just the norm here to get the huge cribs, but in Sweden many use the smaller cribs (like pack and play size but they are cribs.) Anyway, just thought I'd mention it since I think they are affordable and save on space. GL, it is so nice of you to help her out.

Thanks for the advice. We have no Ikea for 250 miles though. I'm not that nice. lol.

  • We have the snugride.  Ours was $120 or $130 but depending on the pattern, most are under $100.

That's sweet of you to buy her such a nice gift.  Lots of luck to her.

  • I'm sure a Snugride would be more than adequate. Good luck to her!

  • We had the Graco Safe Seat...I think it's more than the snug ride.  I have several friends that have the snug ride and they all seem to like theirs.

I know you're not asking about high chair but I wanted to ditto the Ikea suggestion and highly suggest their high chair.  It is only $25 for the high chair and tray and is by far the easiest one to clean and you just can't beat that price.

::Sigh:: I want an Ikea! The closest one is in Chicago, I think. Boo.

  • We had a Graco Safeseat that we borrowed from my SIL. We used an Evenflo Titan before she loaned it to us and that worked just fine. Only draw back is having to get a newborn in and out of a convertible.

One thing that you may want to look into is seeing if your state/county offers carseat discounts. Our county has a carseat program where you can get a convertible for 10-20 dollars for people who can't afford a carseat otherwise.

  • Graco Snugride. Ours was less than $100, it was $89, I think. No complaints from me.
  • Walmart and Target have Evenflo carseats starting at $50. They have a lot of choices for carseats under $100.
  • We had a Garco Safeseat which was great...but Ditto checking Walmart and Target they always have great car seats for under $100
