A rep from the county came to our house yesterday to do the initial screening to see if DC would qualify for speech evaluation. It was mainly a series of questions for me.
DS is almost 17M and does not repeat words and has only 1 identifiable word (light). No mama, dada, ball, etc.
Some of the questions asked I had no idea if DS should be doing these things already. So I'm curious where other DC's are at with these:
1. Does DC go get "stuff" or do simple tasks if you ask them to? (ex, Get mommy's shoes for me or Go put this in the trash can)
2. Does DC assist with putting on their clothes?
3. Does DC consistently wave bye-bye or hello?
4. Does your DC repeat words when asked?
5. Does DC point to pictures when asked? (ex Where's the duck when looking at a book?)
My DS does not do any of the above. The rep is pretty confident he'll qualify.
I feel a bit sad that he is "behind" & a little guilty. Wondering if there is something me & DH are not doing right.
DS did have tubes put in his ears in May 09. He had about 4 ear infections within a 6 month timeframe. So I know this could be the reason he's delayed. But I still feel sad about it!
Re: DS screened for Speech Delay...16-17M, can your DC do these things?
DS does not do #1 and does not do #5 consistently. He does all the others and has for awhile. I have read that #1 is really more of an 18 month marker but I guess the combination of all of the above is the concern.
It's tough and I totally understand your worry but you are being proactive and that is the most important thing. I bet with some therapy he will catch up really quickly!! You are being a good mom - some people would just assume it will come in time and ignore the situation.
1. Does DC go get "stuff" or do simple tasks if you ask them to? (ex, Get mommy's shoes for me or Go put this in the trash can) YES
2. Does DC assist with putting on their clothes? YES but this is something he's just really started doing. He will try to pull up his pants and put on his socks.
3. Does DC consistently wave bye-bye or hello? YES
4. Does your DC repeat words when asked? YES but it depends on his mood
5. Does DC point to pictures when asked? (ex Where's the duck when looking at a book?) YES
Don't upset yourself. You didn't do or not do anything. Kids develop differently. Yours may be the one reading 3 levels above all the others just a few years from now.
Yes, DS can do all of that. He doesn't have TONS of clear words, but he understands a lot and says maybe 10 words?
My SS has a speech delay (is is 7 now, has been getting speech since he was 4 and has an AMAZING vocab now!!!!). He had many ear infections as a baby, I know that can play a HUGE part in speech development. Try not to be hard on yourself. Its not you. The Speech therapy will help! GL!
Don't feel sad! All kids do things at different ages... and you're seeking professional help, so you're doing all you can do! My DD is definitely not as advanced as other kids I know who are close to her age in some areas, but more advanced in others.
1. yes, but very simple, like Bring me your cup or something he really knows. No way would he know trash can.
2. yes
3. yes
4. sometimes
5. yes
We feel like DS knows a lot more words than he says. He also had tubes put in and lots of ear infections. I know that can be a big issue, and we were worried for a while. But in the past month or so it seems like he's sort of exploded with words.
Best of luck!
Yes, DS can do it all. If you are don't know him that well though you would have a hard time understanding some of his words.
My nephew was not talking or doing much of that when he was the same age. They put him in speech therapy and when he turned 2 he started talking and has stopped since.
Don't beat yourself up about it. All kids do things at different times.
My DS can do all those things, except helping with his clothes. And I think he probably CAN do that, but he just hates getting dressed with a passion, so it's not something he cares to do.
But, he didn't start walking until he was 17 months old. So I think while other kids were walking, he was maturing more with speech and vocab. DS has tubes too, but as far as we know he didn't have any hearing damage from his ear infections.
Don't feel bad about it, you're doing the right thing by getting him the speech therapy!!!
Hugs. DS also had tubes put in in April 2009, after almost 6 ear infections. (2 were while we were waiting for his surgery date!) Before then, he didn't talk at all, and it took him a while to catch up - I'd say it was June before he really started having the "speech explosion" our ENT told us to expect.
DS is 19 months now, and is doing all of the things you listed.
Don't feel bad - those months where they can't hear correctly really do a number on their speech development, but the good news is that most kids catch up very quickly. It's fantastic that you guys are having him evaluated this early, because the more he can work with a speech therapist, the more quickly he'll catch up. My BFF's DS is 3.5 and does not speak. At all. They waited and waited, and waited, because they really kept pushing the "some kids are just late talkers" line, and it's really hard for them now - they are having trouble communicating with their DS about potty training, simple things like holding hands when you cross the street... Anyway, my point is - it doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong, and getting him the extra attention he might need for his speech is absolutely right.
Zachary is 18 months now, but by 17 months he could do most of these...
1. Does DC go get "stuff" or do simple tasks if you ask them to? (ex, Get mommy's shoes for me or Go put this in the trash can) YES
2. Does DC assist with putting on their clothes? YES
3. Does DC consistently wave bye-bye or hello? YES
4. Does your DC repeat words when asked? Sometimes
5. Does DC point to pictures when asked? (ex Where's the duck when looking at a book?) Sometimes
Don't feel bad. Babies learn at different rates, so most likely it wasn't anything that you and your DH did or didn't do. There are tons of kids out there who don't really start talking until 2 years or later and are perfectly fine! If you want to be proactive about his speech, that's wonderful. Just don't beat yourself up about it.
1. yes
2. yes
3. yes both
4. no
5. yes (animals, mostly)
It seems like K is doing really, really well with nonverbal, but her only consistent word is mama. They all do things at different ages. K understands just about everything I tell her (really) but can't or chooses not to talk.
1. Does DC go get "stuff" or do simple tasks if you ask them to? (ex, Get mommy's shoes for me or Go put this in the trash can) - I can give him something and tell him to take it to Daddy and he will, and vice versa
2. Does DC assist with putting on their clothes? - Not putting on, but he understands when we undress him and will lift his arms or legs.
3. Does DC consistently wave bye-bye or hello? - If asked/told he will wave when you tell him to say bye
4. Does your DC repeat words when asked? - Sometimes
5. Does DC point to pictures when asked? (ex Where's the duck when looking at a book?) - Sometimes
And by the way... as pp said, kids develop at different times... DS has always communicated a lot but he is not walking at 16 mos! Hang in there!
1. Does DC go get "stuff" or do simple tasks if you ask them to? (ex, Get mommy's shoes for me or Go put this in the trash can): yes
2. Does DC assist with putting on their clothes? : yes
3. Does DC consistently wave bye-bye or hello?: yes
4. Does your DC repeat words when asked?: sometimes, depends on his mood
5. Does DC point to pictures when asked? (ex Where's the duck when looking at a book?): yes, but he doesn't always get it right.
I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry. If they think he will qualify, then he will be getting some help. I'm sure in no time he will really start to blossom. My DS only has a handful of words, and those have really only come in the last few weeks.
My daughter cannot do #2, putting on her own clothes or taking them off. She tries to take her diaper off when that is all she has on. She is no where near taking off or putting on clothes.
#5, she only points to pictures when she wants.
At 19 months, DD still doesn't consistently wave hi or bye.
Up until recently, she would only repeat words that she knew how to say -- so you could ask her to say mama, snuggle, tickle, etc. and she would, but she wouldn't try to say something like "fish" that she didn't know.
I feel like she's just starting to hit a real language bump and starting to do much more verbal imitation, making animal sounds, etc.
My pedi said at our 18 month appointment that she was a "little behind" and if she didn't start doing more verbally that she'd refer us to EI by 24 months. But I feel like DD is just starting to hit her stride now, and hopefully that will continue.
You're doing the best thing for your little guy by getting him the early attention!
DD1, 1/5/2008 ~~~ DD2, 3/17/2010

3. Does DC consistently wave bye-bye or hello? NO - depends on his mood
4. Does your DC repeat words when asked? Yes
5. Does DC point to pictures when asked? (ex Where's the duck when looking at a book?) - NOT AT ALL
1. Does DC go get "stuff" or do simple tasks if you ask them to? (ex, Get mommy's shoes for me or Go put this in the trash can) Yes
2. Does DC assist with putting on their clothes? Kind of...if you help him, DS will put his own arms in/out of his shirts
3. Does DC consistently wave bye-bye or hello? Not hello, but usually goodbye
4. Does your DC repeat words when asked? Rarely
5. Does DC point to pictures when asked? (ex Where's the duck when looking at a book?) Ehh, 50/50...we're working on this
1. Does DC go get "stuff" or do simple tasks if you ask them to? (ex, Get mommy's shoes for me or Go put this in the trash can)
YES
2. Does DC assist with putting on their clothes?
YES - - she tries. She also tries to do her diaper and wipe herself. When I go to the bathroom she hands me the TP so I can wipe myself.
3. Does DC consistently wave bye-bye or hello?
YES - - and says hi and bye bye appropriately.
4. Does your DC repeat words when asked?
depends what they are
5. Does DC point to pictures when asked? (ex Where's the duck when looking at a book?)
depends if she knows what the picture is
My DD does do most of those things, yes.
?The ear thing could definitely be to blame. My cousin had a hearing problem that was not detected/treated until much later and it caused some serious delays in communication for her.
You are a great mom for looking out for any issues and dealing with this now. Even if he is a little behind now, that doesn't mean he won't catch up with his peers down the road. Try not to be too sad/worried! Hopefully he (and you) will get some help and be able to work on it. He'll get there.
?Plus, some kids are just late talkers. My husband was, our nephew was. Both are fine now. That's okay too!?
baby #4 due March '17!
My nephew had severe ear infections that scarred his eardrums and created problems with his speech. He basically couldn't hear until he was almost 3yo, and add in adenoid and tonsil infections, he couldn't speak words that anyone other than his 11-month-younger sister could understand until he was 4. He can still be very difficult to understand, kind of like a deaf person who is speaking but can't hear himself.
However, speech intervention has helped immeasurably. They have worked with him in ways my sister would never have known to do.
Don't be down, I bet your DS is just fine. My DS did a few of those, but did not do 2, 3, o4 5 until recently and now he does all of this consistently. They develop at different rates.
My nephew had speech delays because he didn't get his tube until he was 2 yrs old and had 10+ ear infections and soon after he got his tubes, his speech improved considerably. Give it a few months, I bet he'll catch up very fast, although I don't even think he is behind. Does he babble? If so, I honestly would not worry. DS only said dadda at that age, and only in the past month started saying mommy.
Good luck!
