Adoption

Homestudy question

I know someone who had a homestudy because they were becoming a foster parent and later adopted the child.  My question is, is a foster homestudy the same as a domestic adoption homestudy?  I was thinking of asking her what she needed for her homestudy  and getting all that stuff ready for when it's my turn.

 Thanks.

Re: Homestudy question

  • I would think a lot of it is similar.

It's difficult to get a lot of the information together too far ahead of time. With things like tax returns or pay stubs, that can change from year to year. Some of the questions are specific to the agency or you won't know what they're going to ask until you apply. Fingerprint and abuse clearances cost $.

    Just my 2c.

  • We've only done the foster home study but it seems from what I've read on here that they are very similar.  Our state required all the forms referenced above as well as medical exams, references, and fingerprinting at the foster home study (well, they neglected to tell us before the actual home study so we provided those things shortly thereafter).
  • According to my adoption agency, no. I think I copy/posted a topic on this awhile back from their newsletter. I think it was entitled: getting the RIGHT home study.

Home studies created for the purpose of state-based adoption (foster-adoption) typically gathers information specific to the state needs/rules but is not universial for other states when entering into a private domestic adoption. Often times, when home studies for the state are done by the state SWers the information that is reported is not as thorough as it is done for a private domestic adoption - as those home studies must be able to be used in ALL states in which the adoption agency may complete an adoption.

Our agency stated that when p-aps come to them with a state performed home study that was intended for FA it has to be completely re-done.

The information that is gathered is typically the same (birth certificates, marriage licenses, copies of DLs, financial records such as front copy of the last tax return, itemization of your expenses each month and income including savings, stocks, bonds, and other investments). However, again - adoption agencies that will work with all states in which they are legally allowed may ask for additional information, additional background checks (depending on how many states you have lived in and how long ago it was) in order to comply with all states (some state may have more minimalistic requirements while other states may have more requirements) - your adoption agency will ensure that the home study that is completed will meet the needs of any state they work with.

  • As the others said, it can vary. I wouldn't really worry about getting anything ready ahead of time. It really doesn't take long at all to get the paperwork together and the things that take longer (clearances, doctor letters, employer letters) are all things that expire so make it very hard to do it ahead of time. If you wanted to do something now, I would say you could get your certified copies of birth and marriage certificates, but other than that I would spend any prep time on reading books on adoption or parenting over paperwork for the homestudy.
