Kohl's and Writing checks---wtf?

I went to Kohl's today to buy some more things for baby, and I went to write a check at checkout and the lady made me present her with TWO forms of ID, a credit card and my driver's license. I have never had any store do this before.

Has anyone else? It really pissed me off. What if I didn't have a credit card? How would I prove I was me then?

Rant over. Stick out tongue

Hahaha. I don't charge things, I pay cash or write a check. Easier to keep track that way!

I also don't have a debit card, which I need to get because places are starting to get anal about checks apparently!

yes, debit cards make life so much easier!

  • I get very angry when I write checks/use a credit card and the cashiers won't accept my military ID, which is still a valid photo ID.  Most cashiers flat out tell me it's because they just don't know what they are looking at...

I also have had my checks turned down because it has an APO address on it.  I always get pissed about this too, since I do not have a physical US address.  I usually say fine and give them my Japanese address, making sure to write as much of it in Japanese as I can.

I totally agree with you.  I do not have a credit card myself, so what would I have done?

  • I'm surprised they even allow checks. Many stores are no longer allowing checks at all.
  • So what, they're just supposed to take your word for it that it's your chequebook? Not to mention they need your information in case the cheque bounces. At least with a credit card, they're guaranteed to be paid anyway even if you're committing fraud.

Retailers aren't allowed to store that info anymore.  They can just check that the name on all three matches but can't keep your CC info.

  • When I take a check at work (Best Buy), I have to get DL's number, birthday, DL exp. date, phone number, name and address.  And the name and address have to be pre-printed on the check.

We don't get very many checks anymore, but they are still perfectly acceptable and we are happy to take them if you have a DL or state ID.  I don't get why Kohl's needs a credit card?  If it doesn't have your pic on it then it doesn't prove anything does it?
