Trying to Get Pregnant

Wisdom Teeth removal and TTC

So I found out today that I need to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted.  Two of them are impacted and totally growing the wrong way.  I told my dentist that we were TTC, and he didn't really sound very confident in his answer that it was safe while TTC. I trust my dentist, I just don't think he gets this question a lot and stumbled through telling me it was safe.

I am going to call my doctor on Monday to ask her, but was curious of any of you ladies have had your wisdom teeth extracted while TTC.  What did your dentist tell you?

I don't know if it's safe. My GP told me to go to the Dentist for a check up before TTC because if I needed any dental work it should be done before you are pregnant. And 4 wisdom teeth extracted would be major dental work.

But also make sure you ask your doctor too.

  • I just had half of my wisdom teeth removed at the end of June because although I need all 4 taken out, my dentist's practice will only do one side at a time.

Anyhow - I talked to my OB-GYN about it briefly when I saw her at the end of May during an appointment. Her only concerns were, if we were actively TTC, be careful of the amount of pain meds I took after the extractions, and to opt for a local anesthetic instead of being completely knocked out for the procedure.

DH and I decided it was best to just hold off on TTC until after it was done. I'm glad we did because I had the extraction done on a Friday and I was in so much pain that day and the subsequent weekend. I spent that whole weekend on a Vicodin high and I still felt crappy. :/

Good luck to you with making your decision! I hope if you go for the extraction, it's a lot easier on you than it was on me. :)

  • I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed a few years ago.  It may or may not be safe, but I would skip TTC that month even if it was safe!  I was MISERABLE for a solid week.  Black and blue jaw.  Completely swollen.  Had a very difficult time eating and was on mostly a liquid diet.  And I took vicodin for I think at least 4 days.  I had IV sedation during the procedure instead of general anesthesia.

I had a bad case.  It was worse than the oral surgeon initially thought.  My mom was in the waiting room and started to get really worried because it took them so long to get mine out.  So I don't mean to scare you.  But I think it is one of those things that you just don't know how miserable you are going to be.  My sister had hers out with a lot less swelling and trouble.

Aside from TTC, I recommend (with your dentist's approval) having a plain tea bag handy.  I had trouble with the bleeding afterwards but biting on a tea bag REALLY helped.

Off BCP August 2010, NFP to avoid. Start TTC May 2011. TTA December 2011 - May 2012 doctor's orders :( TTC July 2012-January 2013. Currently pursuing Napro Technology. January 2013: Napro nurse is starting me on Vitex 3 DPO and Naproxen 8 DPO until my first appointment with the doctor. Based on my charts, they highly suspect endometriosis. image
  • What if you scheduled it for a time that was right after (or during) AF? Maybe you wouldn't have to avoid TTC then b/c the meds would be out of your system by the time you O.

If you have impacted wisdom teeth, get them out! I have a friend who decided to wait a 'little while' before going ahead and getting hers out and she ended up with a terrible infection and was in the ICU for three days. Tthough, she does have Crones so her immune system is lower than most, it scared me into making sure I don't put off dental work!

  • I agree with PP who said try to schedule during or right after AF.  And I would strongly advise against just going with local anesthesia - you want to be KTFO for this!  Had mine done in 2007 and it was terrible.  Don't mean to scare you but I was in serious serious pain, had dry sockets afterwards, etc.  Couldn't eat for a week. I am fairly certain you are not going to be feeling like making the sexy after this happens to you.  Would TTA that month if you can't work it with your AF schedule.  GL to you!

I totally agree. I opted for the local anesthetic because I thought I'd feel alright after having it done, plus my doc felt that was better, but OMG, I wish I had been knocked out.

Hearing all of the noise during the procedure made me freak out. My heart was beating like crazy, my blood pressure went through the roof - and when I left the dentist's office, DH was driving me home and I had a blubbering breakdown in the car because I had been so scared.

    Totally get knocked out. Yes

  • The plan as it stands today would be to have all 4 of them out this Thursday which should be CD2 if AF shows up on schedule. I think it's probably a good idea to TTA this month just in case, but we will see how I feel after the surgery.I think I will have to be put under. I had a root canal a few years back and was terrified the whole time because I could hear and see everything that they were doing. I jus dint know if I could put myself through that again.Thank you for all of the advice.
