Is 9-10 hrs/day enough sleep for a 3.5yo?

My Daughter will only sleep 9 hours at night. We've tried early bed time, late bedtime, and nothing changes. She is exhausted by the evening. Yesterday she was asleep by 8, and then up at 4:50 this morning. We make her stay in her bed until 6 but she doesn't go back to sleep. When she's at daycare she sleeps for an hour, but won't nap at home, other than 15 minutes or so in the car.

  • Thats about how much my DD sleeps at night. She's fine, not cranky so I think its ok for her. She's never been big on sleep.

Mine usually goes to bed at 10ish and is up anywhere from 7:30-9am.

  • my son is 3.25 and he needs 12 hours.  But it's really obvious.  He's a disaster if he doesn't get it.

  • I think it depends on the kid.  I still need a good 8 if I can get it or more.  I've always been a sleeper.  DH is happy on less and gets cranky if he gets too much. So far, the girls seem to take after me, but maybe DD#2 less so.  DD#1 gets a good 10-11 hours at night (8pm-7am give or take a bit) and still often takes an hour to two hour nap.  That said, I know plenty of her friends who go to bed later, get up earlier and don't take a nap.  Everyone's different.  If your LO is ok with the schedule, go with it.
  • I was just wondering the same thing after DD#1 woke early for the millionth day in a row (today's wake-up time was 5:45, which is just too ridiculous for me!) She goes to bed around 8, and he naps 1.5-2 hours every day... I'm thinking it may be time to drop the nap... boo hoo!

  • It's not enough for my DS and he's almost 4. I would say that it's not enough for her either b/c you say she's exhausted by the end of the day. Have you tried putting her to bed earlier by only a few minutes at a time and slowly adjusting her bedtime?
  • That's approximately what DD is getting these days & she's 3...to bed asleep by 845pm and then up around 615 (or earlier as this AM was 545)..she gets 1 hour nap at daycare but won't nap at home anymore. She was sleeping until about 715 or so up until early last week.

  • My kids always needed between 10-12 at night and still took a 2-3 hour nap during the afternoon...and that was until they were 5.  Sometimes if they are up all day (no nap) and then up late at night (usually if we go to a theme park all day type thing) he will sleep in and will nap earlier and even sleep longer for nap (4 hours).

Why does you DD fall asleep on the way home in the car?  Can't you keep her awake and allow her to nap at home.  If she sleeps for an hour at daycare she probably needs the extra hour (or more) of sleep.  If you keep her up later at night does she sleep later in the morning?  I read that a lot of kids don't get enough sleep...even though the parents say they don't need it I guess they really do.  I am sure some kids don't need as much sleep...just as some adults don't need much sleep.  My DH has gotten by with 5 hours of sleep each night for years and years.  Seems like he makes up for it on the week-ends when he takes a 2-3 hour nap!  lol
