3rd Trimester

What do I need for the crib?

Can someone help me out and give me an itemized list of what I need in the crib to complete it?  I'm so confused about mattress pads, waterproof pads, etc.

All I have now is a sheet, crib skirt and bumber.  What other goodies are necessary before LO arrives.

Also any tips on best changing pad?

Thank you!

  • Mattress and mattress pad.  Mattress pads are waterproof pads to protect the mattress from getting wet.

  • I *highly* recommend the Ultimate Crib Sheet - especially since you're using a bumper.  https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3188798  These go over your regular sheets and are a breeze to change - you just snap one off and put another one on.  Trust me, changing crib sheets is a PITA.  You have to disassemble the whole crib just to change a sheet.  These things make it so much easier...especially when there is an accident in the middle of the night.  I have 3 of them so I always have one clean.  This is one of my #1 recommendations for baby products.
  • You will definitely need a mattress pad. Maybe even two for those wet nights (they happen). Most of the crib mattress pads are waterproof so you don't need to buy a separate waterproof pad. As for the bumper, this is your choice, but they are saying to stay away from the thick bumpers now because they are not safe. The have the new breathable bumpers that are wonderful. That's about all you need for a crib; mattress, waterproof mattress pad (or 2), a few sheets and a swaddling blanket.

As for the changing pad, I think they are all pretty much the same. The only thing I like best is a very soft pad cover. Not one of those scratchy ones. You're LO will be naked on there sometimes and ouch that would hurt against their soft skin. So I made sure to get the super soft ones!

  • I'd also recommend a breathable bumper over a regular one.
