Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Need help with sick baby...(kinda long)

L got sick on Thursday:  diarrhea, 101 temp, not eating and very lethargic.  Took to pedi.  Pedi said he would be fine, not dehydrated.  Gave me signs of dehydration said would become a problem if L started vomitting.

Friday, Saturday:  same symptoms (diarrhea, 101 temp and lethargic).  BUT eating normally.

Sunday and today:  diarrhea, temp.  But eating normally and acting normally

Multiple calls to the pedi.  They are not concerned.  Aside from the fact that I think I need a new pedi, would you be worried?

What is the longest your child has had both a temp and diarrhea?  TIA.

  • Is your LO about to pop a tooth?

  • It seems like he is old enough, but I keep feeling his gums, and there is nothing.
  • Have you been giving tylenol for the temp. DS gets a temp after his shots, but after I give him tylenol once he is usually fine.

Edit: if he has a viral thing, there isn't much the pedi can do.

    Maybe 3 days.

I know it's hard not to be concerned when it's YOUR kid, but this doesn't have alarm bells going off for me, either.  S/he's not getting worse - in fact, it sounds like it's getting better.  And if there's no dehydration, there's not much they can do for them. This doesn't sound like something antibiotics would necessarily help.

Is tylenol/motrin helping the fever at all?

  • Thank you both. Yes, I am alternating Motrin and Tylenol.  And, his fever goes down (back to normal).  What is happening is that his temp the past few days is fine in AM and "spike" before afternoon nap.  I guess I am being too worried.  Thank you.
  • you're worrying too much.  There's not much they can do; the fever is relatievely low grade and it sounds like he's getting better.  Viruses need to run their course.  I don't think you need a new pedi at all unless they are making you feel bad or like a bother for being worried.

  • I hate to say it, but diarrhea can last up to 2 weeks in a baby.   As long as they are getting fluids in, they will be ok (keeping the butt free of rash is the biggest nightmare).   My LO went through a 10 - 14 day viral thing when he was younger (several months back) and there wasn't anything to be done.  However, they usually wouldn't run a fever the whole time, I don't think (our guy didn't get a fever at all with his).  But like PP said, if it's viral, there's only waiting it out that can be done, with tylenol for fever.   I don't recall how old he is, but sometimes yogurt can help return the gut to a good state when things start getting better. Sorry, and hope LO is better soon.  : (
