S/O Baby on Board Signs- what's the point?

I honestly don't get the point of "baby on board" signs.  I mean, no one thinks that other drivers are going to see the sign and think "oh, I if there's a baby in there I'll make sure not to get into an accident with them," right?

So what am I missing?

  • Maybe they deter road rage?...or not.  Regardless I won't have one.

  • I think people are hoping that other drivers won't be as aggressive with them - especially with tailgating.

I really don't think it works, but to each their own.

  • The idea behind it is that first responders will see and know that there might possibly be a child involved. Same idea as those stickers people have for their front doors about pets inside the home in case of fire.

I know DH tends to be more patient with drivers if they have that sign in their car... It's as though he needs to know that there's a reason they're driving super slow or extra cautiously - otherwise he just gets annoyed!

  • thank you so much to the PP.  I never ever thought of that as a reason.  Now I feel silly.  I always thought they were silly!!

Ok, I'll kind of buy this... though I assume the first thing that first responders do is scan the vehicle to see who's in it and who needs the most urgent care, and my baby isn't going to be hiding in a second floor closet of my car, scared to come out, but in a big old car seat in plain sight.

I agree - its not like they have to really search they would be able to see the carseat(s).  I personally don't like the signs and think they are tacky.

You would be suprised how fast they'll move towards that little yellow sign. Which is easier to see from a distance than a car seat most times. Knowing hundreds of people in these types of professions, babies always take priority to them (Rightly so, IMO).

  • I like them. I don't have one, but some days I wish I did when idiots drive behind me crazy. It's like DUDE!! I have my kids in the car drive carefully!
  • I never understood them either, lol.  They just look like garbage.

Oh, I second this one thousand times. I would never have one. Just telling what I've heard/read on the subject of those awful things.

It's not so easy to just see a carseat if the car is filled with smoke, flipped upside down, etc.  DH is a firefighter/EMT and has plenty of stories that make me cringe.

  • Oh I know! I hate these signs! They are the stupidest things ever! Like we purposefully get into car accidents with people.

But do people actually take the sign down if the baby is not currently in the car?  And if the responders can't see into the car well enough to clearly see who is in it, they'll look, right?

Maybe they should invent an accessory that automatically displays the current occupants of the car somewhere- like you can program people in to it and select them on the screen when you get in, or just select the number of children and adults in the car, and it would create something that rescue personnel can scan for or see upon arrival at the scene.

    THIS!

  • Honestly as an EMT, we will react faster if we see one.  Plus we have special instructions if we see the sign and the adult passengers in the vehicle are unresponsive, to search the area extra thoroughly for an infant or car seat that has become dislodged and thrown from the vehicle.

That being said I won't have one because I feel that it attracts unnecessary attention in outher situations that I don't want to deal with.

  • I didn't even think about the benefit of having EMTs and such being able to "see" that there was a baby in the car right away.  I always thought the stickers were tacky, but it's the one thing that DH really really wanted to put up...so I figured it wasn't worth an argument.
  • I think they mean "I will sue the f*ck out of you if you even think about hitting me."  Actually, I'm pretty sure they work- there are definitely people out there who have enough road rage to rear end someone on purpose, and this would deter.

Oh, this would be just my luck. I would get into a possibly fatal accident with that stupid baby on board sign in the back and the EMT's would search the vehicle up and down before helping me and all the while baby would be at home with dad.

This is why I always thought people had them--I didn't even think about first responders at an accident scene.
