High-Risk Pregnancy

New to the bump...

I just wanted to pop in & say hi to everyone.

A little background:

We just got married in December 08, & are now expecting our First little angel. Total surprise, but were so happy. At our 23 week apt, we found out that our little angel was coming sooner than we thought. At our big U/S they found out that my cervix was all ready starting the process of labor,& I was having contractions. They immediately got the labor under control, got me steroids for his lungs & another shot to try and keep me pg for as long as they can. I'm on strict bed rest (at home), but am being seen by a team of high risk Ob's & Peri's every week. Not exactly how I saw this pregnancy going. All the doc's are saying that our little boy will be born around 34 weeks (if my body can make it that long).  I must say that its very hard waking up every morning not knowing what will happen. But we pray everyday for just a little more time to cook him.

H&H PG's Everyone.

Re: New to the bump...

  • Welcome to the Bump and high risk.  I'm sorry all that is happening to you.  We've all had something to make our own pregnancies not go exactly the way we wanted them, so we can all sympathize.  We have a ton of ladies with PTL/IC here and others with a bunch of stuff.  And we're all willing to lend an ear and type words of encouragement.  We have a daily check-in for our bedrest mamas and it generally keeps most of us going.  The majority of us do deliver early here, so we're also encouraging for that unpleasant surprise too.  I'd encourage you to go to the preemie board and read some of their threads about 34 weekers and how they do.  They're a friendly bunch-- and they answered all my newbie questions when I asked!

I'm actually going in to be induced tomorrow at 36 weeks.  My baby is really small and doesn't grow well, so my doctors have decided that because of the risk of stillbirth, LO is better out than in.  So they've pulled the plug.  36 weeks is great, but I'm nervous, and in all the time I've been on here (since 26 weeks when I had an abruption) these ladies have been awesome to me.  So then next time I post, I'll be a preemie mama, which freaks me out to no end.  But it is what it is.  All 4lb11oz of the munchkin.

Anyway, we're glad to have you, but sorry you have to join us.  Any questions, just ask away,

  • Thank you & GL tomorrow. Keep us posted on how everything goes. T & P sending your way.
  • Our stories are similar.  I went to my 23w0d apt and also found out I was dilating, had an incompetent cervix, and having mild contractions.  They placed an emergency cerclage - aka stitch at 23w4d.  I am now home on bed rest - 27w5d.  The first few weeks are the hardest.  Hang in there!!!

  • Hi there -?

I have a very similar story to yours. ?I was diagnosed with incompetent cervix at 23 weeks. ?It was badly funneling with only 1cm of cervix and 1cm dilated. ?I was not contracting at the time, though I really didn't know what to feel for at that time, so who knows. ?I was placed on strict bed rest at home and saw a specialist weekly for weekly vaginal ultrasounds and measurements as well as twice weekly NST monitoring. ?I was only allowed to be up for bathroom, showers and doc appts. ?At 24 weeks and 25 weeks, I got steroid shots. ?At 24 weeks I started with 3mg terbutaline 3x per day, and 1600 of magnesium 2x per day. ?Our OB didn't really think we would make it to 29 weeks - that was our original goal. ?Then when we did, the goal was adjusted to 32 weeks. ?Then 34 weeks. ?And now, I'm full term at 37 weeks, 2 days. ?We've had some hiccups along the way with a trip to the hospital around 34/35 weeks with contractions - which they controlled with terbutaline shots. ?Then last week, we had a false alarm at 36 wks, 5 days. ?But, now we're still pregnant. ?:) ?

I can imagine what you are going through and I can honestly say that following doctors orders to the T has been the reason that we are at full term today. ?Bed rest is not easy, nor fun - there are a lot of things that I have missed out on, as you will soon discover and learn to accept (like baby showers and shopping for baby gear, furniture, clothes, etc) but all of those things in perspective are things you can easily catch up on after you are full term and have had a healthy baby. ?:) ?

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. ?I'd be more than willing to share my experiences if that will help you. ?

    Good luck!?
