so today i had 3 ketones in my urine, the nurse mentioned it but the doc didn't and honestly by the time he came back i'd forgotten about it! anyway, she asked me if i'd eaten today and i had ate at 1230 (urine sample was around 130) and then she asked me if i'd had plenty to drink, which honestly i hadn't and i was really thirsty at that time which i told her.
can anyone clue me in on what that means? i tried google but it only confused me haha.
Re: ketones in urine...
It usually means you are dehydrated or need to eat something (you start burning up muscle when you run out of caloric intake and that creates ketones in the urine)
or
diabetic's pass ketones alot too. But that doesn't mean you are diabetic....probably your food had not digested yet and so you were still spilling ketones into your urine at that time.
My doc said I had ketones in my urine because I was not eating quite enough carbs. Which of course was frustrating to hear since I have GD too. I drink a ton of water, so I don't think for me it was dehydration, but I guess that makes sense too.
From what I understand ketones are released when you do not have enough energy from food (specifically from carbs) and so your body starts burning it's stores to keep you going. Apparently it's a big thing for people on the Atkins diet - they eat so few carbs that they go into ketosis and thus burn off fat. My doc said she certainly doesn't want me doing that, though, since I'm pregnant. But, she also said not to stress out about it too much, it's not going to be a big problem for the baby, I just need to eat a little bit more carbs.?
