What to do for a kid who won't eat ANY veggies?

Tough love won't work because she isn't one of my kids but she's staying with me this week and hasn't eaten a single veggie despite my best encouraging and yummiest recipes.??

Do I give up or is there some trick that always works?? She's 5 and as far as I know doesn't eat veggies at home either.? TIA!

  • starve her and withhold hugs.

  • Give her vitamins or try those fusion drinks.

    Hmm, she's 5 & doesn't eat them at home??  That's a tough battle.

Have you tried sneaking pureed veggies into the food?  I often buy the Stage 2 baby food peas, green beans & carrots & put them in my recipies b/c DD wouldn't eat them.  They mix in really well with pasta & sauce.

  • in all seriousness....if she isn't eating veggies at home, she probably won't start with you....that stinks....

  • Zucchini bread?  Will she eat spaghetti?  You can puree all kinds of stuff into spaghetti sauce.
  • cover them in cheese?

feed them veggie burgers and chick patties and broccoli nuggets and vegie dogs

use that cook book about hiding veggies? ( someone bought it for me, which is weird b/c 1. I don't cook, and 2. my kid LOVES veggies...

  • The only way I can get DS to eat veggies most of the time is to let him dip them in "sauce" (dressing, yogurt, etc.) - for a while all he would eat were morningstar things - that we told him were chicken nuggets.
  • I don't know if a 5 yr old will like this as my 2 1/2 yr old does, but the Just Tomatoes brand freeze dried peas and corn are my daughter's fave crunchy snack (as long as there's no chips or pretzels in sight instead)
  • We just bought ds some strawberry/carrot and banana/sweet potato yogurt by Horizon. He really likes it. A 5 year old is tough though.
  • chocolate zucchini muffins
  • My DS (and lots of other picky kiddos I know) really likes freeze dried peas.  They are dry and crunchy which is generally appealing to picky eaters.  I like them too cause they are quick, easy and non-messy to pack for picnic lunches.  Some grocery stores have them, but I generally order online from justtomatoes.com cause DS also likes some of the other freeze dried fruits and veggies they have.

  • Use dip or make shapes out of them--ants on a log, etc.

DS loves the freeze dried peas and corn (whole foods carries them)

Snap Pea Crisps at Trader Joe's are good, too.  They also have freeze dried green beans (in the snack/chip aisle, in a yellow/clear bag about 6x9 in size) - they're a bit salty, but taste a bit salty-sweet and have been a huge hit in our house.

  • Nothing works for my 3 year old.  We have resorted to V8 fusion juice and a flinestone vitamin.  She will eat the occasional carrot slathered in dip.

No, in all seriousness - have you tried "hiding" them in the form of purees? What about cool shapes or concepts? What about veggie dips or veggie/fruit juice smoothies?

  • the dip idea is a good one. try making them pretty? or make a project with toothpicks and a veggie tray so they can bulid stuff like tinker toy style?

raisins celery sticks apple slices broccoli cauli cherry tomato tinker toys

  • I can't believe I didn't think of those freeze dried peas!? I'll try those.? If she likes them, I'm going to send her home with some.??

Thanks for the ideas (I'm going to see if purees and pretty veggies will work too)!? I know it is probably pointless but I'm a worrier.? :)

  • First you get a back scratcher....

I chop up carrots very very fine in the food processor and put them in spaghetti sauce and in chili... anything red and chunky will hide a lot. They could hide in sloppy joes too.

  • puree them into soup or on top of pasta or salad?
  • Sweet Potato Fries!!!

Super Target sells some in the frozen foods section if you don't want to make your own.  There is an "Alexia" brand that is good.

  • I would think seeing your kids eating the veggies would help.  Maybe give her a "treat" incentive for trying a bite?  I have also heard read about a study where they called veggies something exciting like "x-ray vision carrots", "tomato bursts", "power peas", "dinosaur broccoli trees", etc.

  • There is a product out (only place that has them around here is Costco) called Veggie Crunchers (or crunchies).  They are sweet potato, acorn squash, carrots, and a couple of other things.  They are salted with sea salt.  Don't let her see the bag but put some in the bowl and ask if she wants some chips.  They are similar to eating the thicker type potato chips.  Of course the V8 Fusion is good too.  We use both...but my kids have always liked veggie.  For a while my oldest DS would not eat squash (a family favorite) so I would put a little bit of pancake syrup in it and he'd chow down.  My DH did not know I did this or he would have freaked out.  Once he was about 5-6 I no longer had to add the syrup.  lol
  • Two words, Deceptively Delicious.

It's basically purees in all kinds of recipes, including mac n cheese and burgers.
