Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Decided to Go Back to Work, couple of ?'s

I have been SAH since 6 weeks before DS was born, but we have been slowly burning through savings.  Our savings is almost gone (have about a month of saving at current burn rate).

We have a lot of decisions to make.  Day care center, in home care, nanny or nanny share?

How many hours?  I am thinking part-time right now.

Going back to work is just such a big decision.  My hands have been shaking ever since I made the decision and started putting out feelers.  I have had good responses, but just such a big life change.

  • I'm confused.  What exactly are your questions?

Daycare, In home, nanny or nanny share is going to be dependant on your area and how much you have to spend

How many hours, is going to depend on what you want to do and can find.

  • DS goes to an in-home sitter, and it's been fantastic. She teaches them lessons, feeds them healthy meals, and the amount of kids is not too overwhelming. Plus-- it's 3 x's cheaper than a daycare center.

As far as hours, maybe start off part-time to see how it goes first. Test out the waters.?

  • To clarify.

I am looking for the benefits/drawbacks of day care center, in home care, nanny or nanny share.

My field allows for part-time work.  Does anyone work part-time, if you have worked both, which do you prefer?

  • I think that one is really not better than another (daycare vs nanny), there are good and bad with each.  I suggest you visit a few places, interview some people (centers, in home, nanny), get some prices, and think about what you like best and what works well for you

Some daycare centers will let you share a spot with another part time person and it is not too expensive.  When my SS was smaller, he went to a daycare center 3 mornings a week while I worked part time.

Look in local parent circulars, etc and see what you can find.  You will get a better feeling of what is best then

  • Child care is expensive no matter what you decide to use so you have to weigh the cost vs. part time/full time.  I went back full time because financially it made sense (and I like working).  My friend went back part time because her salary wasn't enough to make it worth going back full time.  So that's the first big step.

As for daycare vs. nanny - I had both.  I think there are pros and cons to both.  I think when my ds was an infant, having a nanny was great because he got one on one care and I didn't have to worry about germs as much.

DS started daycare at 15 months and I think any time over 1 year is great for daycare.  They start walking and interacting with other kids more and he really has learned from the other kids.  As for in-home vs. center care, I didn't have a choice because no one in my area does in home.  But I love the daycare center where we are.  That's obviously the most important.  I love the structure he has and the fact that if a teacher is sick, they pull another teacher from a different class so they are never short on kid-teacher ratio.

  • If you decide to go back part time, then you might be limiting your daycare pool as some places don't take part time or don't discount for part time.  But in all honesty, if I could only work part time, I totally would.

As for daycare vs. nanny, at your son's age I think he would probably enjoy the interaction with other children that daycare can provide more.  My sister has a nanny and though she is great and my sister adores her, she still sends me niece to mommy's day out classes once a week so she gets interaction.  I know my son has learned a lot by just watching other kids do things.

  • Another point to consider is that Daycares are very dependable about being open and having staff. My one complaint about our in home sitter is that there are occasions when she's not available (jury duty, funerals, etc.) which causes us to shuffle work and it can be frustrating. But we love that it's a small group of kids and he gets a lot of personal attention at someone's house.
