Does anyone have a kid with a lazy eye?

We think Keira might.  It's not prominent but you catch it usually when she is looking a little to the side.  Only when she looks a little to the side though, straight on you never notice it.

She is 2 1/2, is it something that might correct itself?  We are planning to talk to her doc about it and maybe see a pedi. eye doctor.

Just wondering if anyone has experience with this.

Re: Does anyone have a kid with a lazy eye?

  • DH thinks DD may have this from him but I don't think so. I don't even know if what he has is considered a lazy eye. When he drinks something, it does this strange thing.

Anyway, we took B to the pedi eye doctor I think last year because she was always watching TV sideways, she's fine though.

  • My nephew had one.  It was most noticable in pictures, and when he was very tired.  He had surgery to snip the muscle (creeps me out to this day) and then had to wear an eye patch for about 6 weeks.

He has bad eyes though, and was wearing glasses by the time he was 18 months.  I don't know if that had anything to do with the lazy eye or not.

  • Yeah, DH noticed it first and pointed it out to me.  I didn't notice it until he said that.  My dad has a lazy eye but it is much more prominent, especially when he is tired.

    Thanks X.  :)

  • My niece had one. It was VERY noticeable though. She started off wearing glasses, then had surgery to correct it. She still has to wear the glasses, but the lazy eye isn't nearly as prominent.

  • That's interesting mlm.  I hope we don't have to do something like that, I'm hoping worst case maybe she has to wear a patch for a little while.

Her eyes seem ok besides this.

Your poor nephew that he had to have surgery.  Is he ok now?

  • My DD had to have Eye surgery at 7 months to move the muscles in both of her eyes cause her one eye was turning in and the other was very slight but enough that it was caught by the Pedi Eye Doctor.. The surgery went well and she wheres glasses now cause she is far sighted as well.. see siggy pic.. As of last month 80 percent of her vision has been corrected after months of eye drops and prior to surgery eye patches.. now she only wears the glasses full time no more drops! She is 16 months old now...

Had we not caught it when we did she could have lost all sight in her left eye cause the muscle wasnt stregnthening.. but now she is doing great!

I would def bring it up to your doctor!

  • Yes, he's perfectly fine now.  Thankfully the surgery worked the first time.  From what I understand they have to repeat it sometimes.

And like alot of other things, it was much worse on my SIL than on him.

My nephew has it.  He's 4 now, but it was diagnosed when he was 3.  He started wearing glasses to try to correct it (as well as help his vision which wasn't 20/20).  The glasses didn't correct it, so he now wears a patch on his good eye for an hour a day with the hope of strengthening the "lazy" eye.  Surgery has been mentioned but they are waiting to see if the patch helps first.

My BIL had it as a kid too & it went away.

Yeah DD's surgery was successful the first time around too!! It was out patient and the hardest part was letting her go in.. cause i just had to sit in the waiting room and wait... for about an 1 hour and 10 minutes.. surgery was 10 minutes the recovery was an hour before family could go in! She was clingy all the rest of that day and couldnt keep her anything down due to the anestesia... but the next day she was back to her normal silly self! The white of her eyes were red for about 10 days and now her eyes are straight and she wears glasses!

She has been wearing the glasses since prior to the surgery cause they wanted to see if they would help but they werent fixing the eye that was turning in.. she then got a second percription since one her eyes is worse then the other.. so 2 diff lenses in her tiny little glasses.. and she wears them full time! and she is really good with them took a lil convincing i mean she was 7 months old hehe but We made it work!!

I hope your DD doesnt have to go through all that! Keep us updated!

  • As a baby one of my eyes was considered a lazy eye....it totally corrected itself.  In pictures you could tell that one eye was slightly more open than the other....especially when I smiled.  Not too noticeable but everyone that knows me knows that about me.

  • Thanks everyone.  It's good to hear everyone else's experiences.  I will call her doc on Monday and go from there.

  • No but I did.  Sometimes yes they correct on their own.  I always had it but controlled it enough that they just kept an eye on it (pun intended).  I did muscle therapy for it & then eventually had surgery in 9th grade (and was at school the next day).  Therapy didn't start until 8th grade.  So even worst case, it's still not too bad.  It was only obvious when I was tired or had read too much, I'd sort of lose my control over it.  Headaches apparently go hand in hand with it from controlling it, so as she gets older if she complains abt headaches it may be from this.

I had to go to the opthalmologist yearly starting when I was about 4? 5? to be evaluated & rechecked - definitely ask about it though.

  • Erin has a lazy eye in addition to a cataract in her left eye, and it did not correct itself.  We've been patching/ using eye drops since she was 3 mos old and has had glasses since she was 3 y/o.  Her ped ophthalmologist says we will probably work on correcting it until she's about 8 y/o.  Are you sure you're not thinking of crossed/wandering eyes, though?  It's not always the same thing, although those can occur w/ a lazy eye.
  • Whether or not it will "correct itself" really depends on the degree of "laziness".  My  younger brother had to have surgery because his was so bad.  My youngest brother has a slight lazy eye (and yes, it is genetic) but not bad enough to require surgery.
