If you're feeling funny about using a boy name though, assuming there is no sentimental reason for the name James, you could use Emily Jane. It's almost the same sound.

Good alternative. It's not that I'm feeling uncomfortable about James, I just didn't know if it was too "out there."
I am not a fan of boys names on girls, but if you were trying to honor someone using it as a middle name would be okay. If you are doing it to be different then I can't see doing that to a child.
Absolutely! I have several female relatives with the middle name of Rutledge. It is a very big family name and I have several female & male relatives with that name. In my family there is:
I've heard of people doing that if it was a family name.
Ditto. With middle names, boy names and last names are perfectly fine for girls but tend to make sense when they are honoring someone and have meaning.
#2's mn will be Scott, whether it's a boy or girl. My brother's name was Scott and he died 11 years ago and our first was a girl, but #2 is it for us, so their mn will be Scott, regardless of sex.
DD#1's name is Amelia Abbott ----... it's a family name, but I do think it's more of a male name than female name- regardless, I love her name, and think a more masculine middle name (esp. paired with a girly first name) is very cool.

I am fine with a boy's name for a girl if there is some reason behind it. For instance, Thomas has been given to a female in my family for generations. I would love to continue the tradition and use it as a middle name for a girl if I could talk my husband into it! I would not consider any other male name for my daughter though.

Yeah, this is the thing about it- while I don't hate ALL unisex names or boy names for girls, I do think this makes it harder for parents of boys. The fact of the matter is, no- we (speaking as a soon to be mom of two boys) don't want to use a girl name for our sons OR a boy name that is being really taken over by girls. It kinda sucks.
But I stand by the idea that even the most masculine names can be okay if it's a family name and used as a middle which is rarely used anyway. Especially since a lot of them are last names too, like the example Scott that a PP gave. It doesn't really sound bad plus it honors someone.
I LOVE all the responses you guys! Thanks for your input.I tallied all the and and the win.Just to close the loop, it is a family name and would honor someone who was very special and unfortunately will not be here to meet this little one when she arrives.
I have a niece named Lilliana Thomas Joy. I know alot of people who are doing boys names as a girls middle name. If it has a special meaning to you I'd say use it.
Re: Using a boy name as a middle name for girl
I like James for a girl so I'm totally ok with it as a middle name.
Some boy names I probaly would think were odd for a girl like Emily Roger.

this.
Same, but it is much less bothersome for a middle than a first name
Boy names, like my middle name, are often family names.Ryan, for example from the pp, is also a last name in my family.
I am all for boy names for girls and really like James as a mn for a girl.
We have Alex & Taylor with Ryan as our #3 girl name.

LOL! I am 100% against anything remotely unisex for a boy.

THIS! unless you are trying to honor someone...Jamie is a cute alternative- James is VERY masculine IMO!
Many cultures, particularly those with Hispanic or French backgrounds, this is common, especially with the names Marie and Anne.
Examples: actor Klaus Maria Brandauer, Toulouse Lautrec (real name Henri Marie Raymond Toulouse-Lautrec Monfa).
I love it IF it honors someone.
