Horrible Acne! What can I use?

I can't keep getting monster zits every few days! It is worse then it ever was as a teen.

I know salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are off limits during pregnancy.

What else can I use? Anyone have an over-the-counter magic product that is safe during pregnancy? I don't really care about price anymore - and I am usually thrifty. I'm just that desperate!

Also, anything other acne meds off-limits?

Re: Horrible Acne! What can I use?

  • I still use my salicylic acid products, I use the clean and clear blackhead clearing scrub and clean and clear acne moisturizer. My doctor said face products with salicylic acid is fine, not enough would get into your blood stream to hurt anything. I have had a couple zits here and there but no serious breakouts. Good luck!

  • Actually, they have proven Benzoyl Peroxide to be safe, which is what I use.  They also say that Salycilic Acid 5% or less is probably fine, but haven't proven it yet, so I avoid that one.  You can use glycolic acid if you need an exfoliater.  I like Paula's Choice because it doesn't have any artificial scents or colors, which can irritate my skin.

  • I've heard good things about The Body Shop's tea tree oil. I haven't had the chance to try it out myself yet, but I plan to.

  • My doc said Benzoyl was ok, so I still use it if my back is being stubborn. Clears it up in no time.?
  • I use a Glycolic Acid toner from Sephora (DDF).  Works really well, and dr. said it was fine.
  • I've never used anything different than my regular stuff... my Dr. never said it was a concern.  I use the 3-step from Clinique and have also gotten their exfoliating scrubs (theres one for twice a week and one that can be used every day) for when break outs are worse.  Works as well as anything for me. :)

    Good Luck!

  • I use oil of olay face wash and toner, both with witch hazel.  They seem to have cleared up my acne and don't dry my face out.
  • ?i have been using the tea tree soap (in the pump bottle) and my skin is all clear, i also use witch hazel as an astringent as needed. GL

  • I switched from Tea Tree Oil products from the Body Shop to Mario Badescu products.  Tea Tree Oil is great but I got a PM from another woman on this site that said she began having early contractions when she used it.  I did a lot of research and it's generally not recommended during pregnancy.

  • Both my face wash and lotion have salicylic acid in them.  I asked my doctor at my first appointment and she told me as long as I don't drink them, they are fine.  You should ask your doctor what he or she recommends or take the product that you used pre pregnancy and see if they are ok with you continuing with that regimine.
  • My dermatologist injected mine with a very low dose steroid and also gave me a prescription for  Duac- I think it is a benzoyl/salicylic mix.  Together they have definitely helped calm my face down.  As for face wash and moisturizer, I use Purpose by Johnson and Johnson-both are oil and soap free.
