WDYT: Ok to be slightly irresponsible on behalf of craving?

So last night I watched Hells Kitchen and they made this southern style surf and turf meal- cajun steak with grilled lobster tail-and ever since I have been absolutely drooling over the thought of steak and shrimp. It's like I seriously need a big honking steak infront of me.

Here's my quandry. DH and I just moved and I am in a wedding this weekend, so we are a little tight on cash for the week, so if we went out to dinner to satisfy my craving I'd need to put it on the credit card.

WDYT, is satisfying my craving worth the brief irresponsibility of putting the meal on a cr cd? My head says don't do it, but my body says I'm not going to be happy until I get that steak and shrimp...

Re: WDYT: Ok to be slightly irresponsible on behalf of craving?

  • Can you cook it yourself?  Maybe that would be cheaper than going out to a restaurant.

  • Hell's Kitchen has been torchure for my cravings. What's worse is that it's late at night and I never get to satisfy them. I am all about getting that Steak and Lobster but I am NOT about putting food on a CC, sorry.  If you know you can pay it off this month, GO for it. Otherwise, don't do it. :)

  • I would! Whenever we put stuff on our cc we pay it off that same month!
  • Totally not what I thought the post was gonna be about based on the title...  I was going to say- eat it, give in to your cravings every now and then!

But, since it's about spending (not eating)- my basic philosophy is that food should not be bought on credit.  Groceries, fast food, meals out, etc should be able to be purchased with regular old cash- even if that's in the form of a debit card.  I don't want to be paying for something next month that my body has expelled this week.  Surprise  Credit should be reserved for large home purchases, unexpected things, etc.  If that's not your philosophy, then by all means use your credit card for a meal.

That's true, we would pay it off right away....

Hmmm, and for the PP, I can't really cook it because we don't have a grill

We could however, probalby get away with sharing a meal and as such I doubt we'd need to put it on the cc.

  • I would say yes, but we use our credit card for everything - because of the points we earn.  We also pay them off every month, so I never think twice about using it to pay for my craving of the moment.

  • It's ok to splurge every now and then. I've feel the same way right now about Buffalo Wild Wings and Red Lobster. Those are my two favorite restaurants in the world, and all I asked for my birthday last month was to go out to Buffalo Wild Wings. That's all I wanted! Instead, DH decided I would enjoy a day a the spa more. Well, I have never had a spa day or a professional massage, and I did promise myself that I would get one before LO is born. But.... We're so tight on money right now (some unexpected twists of life sprung on us right at my birthday that made us have to put off my spa treatment), that I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever actually get to go.

And you what the really sad, ungrateful, selfsh part is? I'd rather go to Buffalo Wilds Wings than the spa. But I can't say that since DH thinks he's giving me something better for my birthday. Is that bad? I've never felt this way before, and it makes me terribly guilty. But I just want some Parmesian garlic and honey bbq wings so BAD!

  • Normally I'd so go with your body and get that big honkin' steak! BUT the only thing holding me back is that every time I want a big meal right now, I get 4-5 bites in and wind up taking it home - my eyes are way bigger than my stomach (even though it doesn't look like it on the outside ;-)) I'm not sure if that happens to you - if you can eat it, then I say go for it! Cooking it at home isn't a bad idea - you might wind up doing a better job for cheaper.

  • Ooo Applebees has their 2 for $20 deal going on right now where you share an appetizer and get 2 entrees.  I know one of the entrees you can choose from is a steak.  I have been craving/eating steak for weeks!  I'd use the "my body needs the iron" excuse...but it's up to you!
  • If you do decide to eat out maybe you could do take out to avoid paying a tip.  That will save you a little on the financial end :)
  • I would just wait until after the wedding, when things are going better financially.  Believe me, the craving will still be there!  Sometimes a little patience goes a long way.

Go for this option! DH and I went out last night to a fancy restaurant, had an appetizer, soup, and shared a meal and it was only $25. AND, we both left full. Give in to your cravings without breaking the bank!!!?

Oh, well if you don't carry balances on your cards, just use the card.  You don't want to be adding to debt with a meal.  I charge all sorts of stuff on our cards for miles, points, etc. but we always pay everything off monthly.

  • I say do it!

Just have DH limit the amount of alcohol/liquor he drinks, and that will keep the bill lower.  Or, maybe you can go to a place that's BYOB

  • I say cook at home.

You can cook a pretty good steak on the stove/oven. We have a big fire pit grill outside, and even we do this.

Buy a ribeye that has a lot of marbling.  Season it with good spices--smoked salt is easy to find at most stores and will give it great flavor.  Rub the outside with a little bit of oil, sear it in the hottest pan you can get, and then put it in the oven until it reaches the correct temperature for your level of doneness. We eat medium rare and it only takes about 10 minutes in the oven.
