Skipping feeding while teething?

The past three days Aaron has refused to eat before he goes to bed.  He falls asleep no problem, but then wakes up about 10:30 wanting to eat.  He'll eat about 7 oz at 10:30.  Then he wakes up at his usual 4 am.  So my question is, did anyone else's DC do something similar?

I was thinking maybe it's because he's teething so his teeth are hurting and he's holding out as long as he can (especially because it's the last feeding of the night, but the night time I am sure his teeth are hurting)...

Am I way off?  Thoughts?

  • I don't think you're way off - M's nursing patterns definitely changed when he was teething and he would wake up at night wanting to nurse more. Is he napping okay? I think you mentioned in an earlier post that he was having trouble at naptime so maybe he's just getting too tired and uncomfortable for that bedtime feed.

  • I definitely think it could be his teeth.  You might try giving him a little Tylenol before his bath( if you are doing bath and then bottle) to see if that helps.  I don't know if he was falling asleep with the bottle normally but if he was I would take this as a great opportunity to change up the order of the bottle since he's showing that he can fall asleep without it.
  • Sabrina eats less when she's teething.

She also seems to have the slowest growing teeth EVER, so this can happen on and off for months. Seriously, I've been able to see her top tooth for about 6 weeks. It just pierced the skin yesterday. Slowest.teeth.ever.

  • Logans been doing that a lot too. I thought it was the teething. Sometimes if he is refusing to eat and i know its been awhile, I give him a couple teething tablets and usually he will eat a couple mintues later.
  • sounds about right.  Marin will eat less during the day and bat at her ears when she eats and whine.  But sh gets up A LOT more often at night to nurse.  We've been having to give M the hylands teething tablets a couple times every hour before bed and then if she's still showing super fussy signs we give mortin.   We are a motrin family here... helps with the swelling where Tylenol does not.  Plus motrin lasts longer, and it's almost impossible to OD on motrin.

  • My DS is also currently teething (he's 7 months as of today), and it doesn''t help that he's learned to screech at the top of his lungs in the process.  He's been refusing to nurse the past few nights (nursing strike?).  The first night I ended up getting my husband to bottle feed him.  The second night, I very patiently kept trying to nurse him, calming him down between attempts, until he eventually nursed.  Last night, he refused once before nursing fully and falling asleep (as his usual routine).  Hang in there.
