What can you put in the crib?

I'm pretty sure I have read or heard on here that you are not supposed to put any additional blankets or stuffed animals in the crib with the baby.

But on all the shows on Bringing Baby Home it seems like they have stuff animals in the crib.  Do they just not know??

Re: What can you put in the crib?

  • Most people aren't as research savvy as us Bumpies. There should be nothing in the crib, so I am assuming they don't know or don't care.

  • the safest bet is to put just the baby in the bed.  no bumpers, no animals, no blankets, no pillows until they are old enough to maneuver around, lift themselves up and move things away from their faces.

dd didn't start sleeping in her crib till 10 months.  we added stuffed animals and blankets at 12 months.  she kicks the blanket off every night anyway.  but the animals she likes to talk to when she wakes in the morning.

  • they probably put them in for show, but they should be removed prior to baby being put in the crib.

  • They probably do that for the cameras... I'd like to think... but there are a lot of idiots out there.

  • nothing should be in the crib for quite awhile.  Clothe LO in a warm sleeper and that is all they need.

  • Only the baby goes in the crib, with a snugly fitted crib sheet.  And then, by the time they are old enough to have the bumper, you don't want it in b/c they can use it to climb out of the crib!  No winning!!!
  • I know that the state of TX daycare regulations state that the only thing allowed in the crib with an infant is a receiving blanket.

I've never watched Bringing Baby Home, I would imagine that shows will stage the crib to look good. An empty crib looks boring on TV.

  • You are right... you aren't supposed to put anything in the crib... except baby.  Everything else is a suffocation risk.  Many people either don't know this, or don't care. Everyone has their reasons for doing what they do.

Personally, DD has always slept with a light blanket... at first she was in a sleep positioner and swaddled so it wasn't an issue... after she was out of the sleep positioner she  was used to having the blanket and didn't want to sleep without it.  By that time she was moving around enough that I felt she'd kick it off or away from her if necessary so I didn't bother removing it.

  • They probably know - most hospitals tell you that kind of thing before you leave. I'm guessing they chose to ignore the recommendations.

  • Nothing should be in the crib with them.

  • You are right, just baby is the better safe than sorry rule.  However, you are watching a TV show that is going to stage the home and especially the crib to look cute and welcoming.  This usually means a teddy and bumper and matching blankets etc.  What I hope and assume is that parents on the show are not leaving all of that in there with baby after the camera guy is gone.  Its one thing to have a teddy in there while you are watching/playing with baby and right there to take it away if necessary, its another to leave the room with something that can cover baby up...
  • Nothing in the crib to start.  As they get older, you can start to use a blanket.  I am sure on the shows, they have the nursery nicely decorated for show.  You can have as many pretty things in the crib when the baby isn't in the crib.  But that is a lot of useless work to take things in and out all the time.
