is it beneficial to have a ceiling fan in the nursery?

After reading the post below asking if anyone is installing a ceiling fan, I was reminded that I think someone once pointed out a reason to having a ceiling fan in a nursery.

Am I remembering correctly?  And, if so, what is the benefit?

Re: is it beneficial to have a ceiling fan in the nursery?

  • Better air circulation.  Poor air circulation and heat are considered to be contributing factors to SIDS.  Ceiling fans can reduce both of those.

They can also help save on utility bills, by circulating cool air in the summer (and keeping baby cooler, necessary down here! especially since the upstairs gets stuffier in our house) and reversing them to circulate warm air in the winter.

  • we already have one in there, but I'm interested to hear if there is a benefit as well.

  • I thinks it's for extra air circulation in the room which helps prevent SIDS.

  • Isn't the risk of SID's lower with a ceiling fan?

Studies have shown a 70% reduction in the risk of SIDS if you have a fan in the nursery.
  • If I remember correctly the theory is that having the air circulating can help prevent SIDS.

  • "Keeping the air moving around with an overhead fan dramatically reduced the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by 72 percent, researchers reported Monday."

Call me stupid, but I didn't know they reversed!  That will help in the winter!!!

  • DH thinks that continuous air flow can help prevent SIDs. I'm not sure where he got that info though.
  • Thanks All!  I had orginally suggested this to my husband,  but he exnayed.  I thought I heard a good reason...well, guess I'm going to win that battle!

Stupid. Big Smile I know that some don't but most fans do have a little switch that on them that let you change directions. I just looked at our fan in the living room (well the half I can see from sitting on the couch) and don't see one. I will have to check to see it all of ours do though!

  • Better air circulation means less risk of SIDS. At least that's what I've heard! We already have one in that room, so I'm set.

  • Right - not all fans reverse, but most these days have a little switch.  Our bedroom fan doesn't, but it stays on year round anyway, for air circulation.  And honestly, the upstairs is always hotter, so it helps in winter regardless, lol.

  • The air flow that it provides is supposed to lower the risk of SIDS pretty dramatically, however, the fan being on the ceiling is not necessary, you can put a fan on a desk etc if you do not want to do lighting changes.  Just remember that the ceiling fan will save space...
  • Any fan that is aimed at and circulates air over the baby will do.  Although, the ceiling fan is more aesthetically pleasing. ;)
