Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Baby learnt to roll over, will not sleep anymore

Help - My baby is 6 months. She just learnt to roll over and for the past few days she has refused to take a nap. We lay her down in her crib and she will look like she is ready to nap and within 5 minutes she is rolling over, wide-awake. The only way I could get her to sleep this weekend was to take naps with her. She had been sleeping really well during the night (7:30pm - 5:30am sometimes 6 or 7) and then for the past few days it has regressed back to waking 3 times a night. Last night she was up every hour from 1 am to 6am when I threw in the towel and we got up for the day. She will roll over and I tried to see if she would sleep on her tummy but she kept getting up. At around 3:30 I brought her into the bed with me and DH. Has this happened to anyone else and what did you do?

My DH wants us to try and Ferberize and I have every intention of doing it until I hear her cry and go and comfort her. We have started solids and I thought this would help with the sleeping but she wakes up so often I find I am giving her 1 - 2 bottles a night because she seems hungry (she ate 3 oz's twice last night). She's on 3 solids a day and formula. We have a solid bedtime routine that we started when she was a few weeks old and we had a really good schedule going but this latest development has gotten us completely off track.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Re: Baby learnt to roll over, will not sleep anymore

  • My daughter used to do this when she first learned to roll onto her tummy.  basically she would roll over and then get frustrated that she couldn't roll herself back and she would start screaming.  We were up 3 or 4 times a night going in to put her on her back so she would go back to sleep.  That went on for a couple of weeks and then she just eventually started to fall alseep on her tummy and didn't freak out anymore when she rolled over

  • The same thing happened to DS when he started to roll.  I had a temporary solution of wrapping a blanket under his arms and tucking it into the mattress.  It wasn't the ideal situation but I wasn't ready to do Ferber when he started rolling at 4 months. We ended up doing CIO around 6 months and he's back to sleeping.
