2nd Trimester

I'm feeling sorry for myself re: weight

I'm sorry to make a weight post, but I need to get this off my chest.

I'm almost 21 weeks and have gained almost 20 lbs. I don't (usually) think I look fat, just pregnant. I'm 5'2 and was 117 pre-preg. I'm up to about 135 now.?

I know my Dr. isn't really worried about it, she just said, "Eat healthier foods if you're concerned". My BP is lower than average anyways.

I just feel bad when I see posts or hear IRL of people gaining 20 lbs through their whole pregnancy. I think I'm just having a low self esteem day. Sad At least DH and I are going to the gym together tonight.?

Re: I'm feeling sorry for myself re: weight

  • Do NOT beat yourself up.  It's not worth it.  Stick to healthier foods from here on out and always remember you can lose it all after baby gets here.  No sense in adding stress to what's going on.  Every body is different when it comes to pg weight and how they look - no 2 are alike.  Hang in there and don't be so hard on yourself.  Kel

  • I have gained about the same and I am not worried about it. ?It's the people who have gained 20 pounds throughout pregnancy that feel compelled to talk about it, so of course you hear it now and again. ?Also, I gained 40-45 lbs with my DS and did nothing to loose it except bf and within 3 months I was back to pp weight. ?Don't sweat it!
  • If I were 135 I would be ecstatic.  Listen, you're supposed to gain weight, pregnancy is a right of passage into motherhood and one of the trials is weight gain.  You have to realize that you are creating a life and that's more important that a number on a scale.

  • Don't worry about it so much!  All you can do is make sure your not eating a bunch of junk and try to get some sort of exercise, and the rest is out of your hands.

I'm a couple of days behind you and I've gained almost 20lbs too.  I'm not freaking out about it....I know it's because I'm growing a baby.  Big Smile  So try not to stress about it.  You can always lose the weight after the baby gets here.

  • Don't even worry about. Your weight gain will even out a bit I'm sure. I've heard you gain a lot in 2nd tri and then it slows down because your stomach can't fit as much fod anymore! Plus, you were tiny to start!

  • Thank you for making me feel better about it! I hate talking about this with anyone else b/c first of all, nobody cares. Second of all, it will get my mom going about how she gained 80lbs with my twin sister and I (we weighed 2lbs 12oz and 4lbs 5oz) which isn't normal either.

  • As of 31 weeks I had gained 29lbs.  Don't feel bad.  I am 5'2 and started out at 143.5 (about 10 pounds over my normal weight) and now weigh 171.5 Indifferent

  • I think I'll be worried if I only gain 20lbs! I gained 5lbs last week alone, and I am eating healthy (with the occasional treat) but I'm not worried. The again I lost almost 10lbs during the 1st tri due to severe, constant M/S, so I'm a bit behind, but I'm catching up and DR says baby is healthy so far. But you really shouldn't worry about your weight, and take it easy at the gym, pregnancy is not the time to step up your work out schedule.

  • Don't stress over it! I was overweight to begin with, and I've gained 18lbs as of this morning. My OB isn't concerned about it. Sure, it's shocking to see on the scale, but I'm not going to stress myself out over a few extra pounds. It will come off. And as long as you're eating healthy and working out a little bit (walking, etc) there's no reason to worry.

  • If your doctor is not concerned at this stage in the game, I would try not to focus on it. Every woman gains weight differently during pregnancy and what's an appropriate weight for one may not be appropriate for another. Just continue to eat healthy and exercise and I'm sure you'll be just fine.
  • I am in the same boat as you.  I started out 5'3" and 109 lbs.  At my last appointment (24w5d) I had gained 24lbs!  My doctor said that it was okay and not worry.  I don't need to modify my diet and to keep trying to exercise when I can.  I figured, why be concerned now? I can worry about getting weight off after the baby comes:-)

Ditto... this is my ideal weight once babies come out and mama gets her big booty back into shape!!

  • :( Just keep in mind that everyone's pregnancy is different. I'm sure you look great and have a very healthy baby!

And by the way, I don't see anything wrong with weight posts. We all need to vent somewhere and non-pregnant people don't really understand.

  • If it makes you feel better I gained 10lbs in 4 weeks bringing my total to 20 lbs at 22 weeks

Just try to get some exercising in. Sometimes there's just not much you can do

  • I have gained about 25 pounds so far and at my last doctor's appointment weigh in, the scale was almost to the point of needing to be bumped up a notch for the 25 pound increment part.  The nurse said, "ooh, you're almost there!" I said, "I'm not so sure that's a good thing." She said, "When you're pregnant, weight gain is always a good thing."  I think this may be part of why I love my doctor's office.  Nobody has ever made me feel bad about any weight gain, they just make it seem like a natural part of pregnancy.  I gained about 50 pounds with my son and they never said a peep about it.  Thankfully, I lost all that and a little extra within 12 weeks of my son's birth, all just from breastfeeding--goodness knows there was no exercise involved on my part!  So, the point of all that is, don't stress about how much you are gaining--you're fine.

  • I think most people have a day or two like this. It just goes against our typical mindset. When we see ourselves visibly expanding and the numbers going up, it trips a trigger mentally.

Just weigh yourself every two weeks or so, and do what you can to make healthy choices.

Plus, remember that people think PG ladies are cute and supposed to be big! :)

    .
  • If you're doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either! Everybody had me freaking out because I was gaining weight quickly (12 lbs. by 12 weeks) Sure enough, went to the doctor and she wasn't concerned in the least bit. BP is great, eating just fine, etc. I have a hard time not comparing my weight gain to other people too because I just keep gaining week to week. But every BODY is different. Yours is going to do what it needs to do bring a LO into the world.?
  • People gain weight at different times during their pregnancies, and some people only gain a little, and others gain a lot.  Worry about what is healthy for you, not what is healthy for others.

If your doc isn't worried, you don't need to be either.

  • I know how you feel.  With my DD I gained 60lbs! People gain different amounts and our bodies react differently to pregnancy.  My SIL ate healthy and exercised and still gained about 40lbs.  If your Dr. isn't worried then try not to beat yourself up about it.

Exercising is great! I have a Fit Mama Dvd and the cardio portion is Salsa dancing...it's a light workout but it's soo fun. Try looking into something to make you feel better about yourself.

GL! You CAN lose weight after your LO is born.

  • I gained about 40 lbs with my first pregnancy and I had my son two months early.  I can only imagine what the scale would have topped off at had I gone full term!  Within about 8 weeks I had lost all but 5-10 lbs of it just from breast feeding.  I ate healthy and exercised everyday of my pregnancy too.  I think some of us are just predisposed to pack on the pounds.  I remember for two months in a row I gained 10 lbs a month.  But I was constantly hungry!  My Dr. was never concerned at all.  My blood pressure was always low and I was overall very healthy.  I'm 16 weeks now and so far I've already gained around 20 lbs and not in my belly at all.  At this point I just look chubby.  I consider it "counter weight" to prepare for my growing belly.  Wink If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it too much.  It seems that there are some of us who are not destined for just a cute little baby bump but a few more here and there too.  Just know that you are not alone.

  • I'm in the same boat (though I started heavier than you! Smile).  I realized something this morning--I can use the number on the scale to beat myself up, or to motivate myself to make better food choices and be more active.  So, I weighted myself this morning, and we're having a salad for lunch today and going for a long walk.  Wink  Plus, I want to start healthy habits so my little girl sees her mommy taking good care of her body.

    It's still hard, though!

  • I'm up 30 at less than 23 weeks and I exercise for at least an hour every day and eat well.  My BP and stats look great so my doc said not to worry - some people just gain more.  So long as you are healthy and your doc isn't worried then you shouldn't be either.
