Help me diagnose my DD ( 7 months)

My DD is 7 months today . She is acting kind of funny since last night. She was tugging/rubbing her left ear last night and even when she woke up in the night. She is not sleeping well, not eating well and is kind of fussy. No temperature. Common sense tells me this is a ear infection. I looked and there are not any new teeth coming in.

I am going to take her to after hours care tonight after my dh gets home but until then is there anything I can do for her?

If you think she's in pain, you could do tylenol or motrin.

Otherwise, there's not much you can do.  FWIW, though, when DS has an ear infection, he SCREAMS, and there's usually other evidence.  Yours could still be teething, even if you can't see the teeth. (or it could be an infection - worth checking, of course.)

  • Sounds like teeth to me. Usually if it's the ear they don't want to be bothered touching it at all.

If your sure it's the ear than go to urgent care to get them checked. At least you'll know either way.

  • My dd was like that with a cold before she got  congested.  You could try giving Tylenol or Motrin to see if that helps her sleep better.
  • If she's never had an ear infection, it's kind of hard to tell if it is or not.  Good call just taking her in to the ped.  Until then, have you tried Tylenol?
  • I think it sounds like teething (tugging on their ears is a common symptom). Usually with ear infections there is a temperature. If you are concerned call the pedi.

  • tugging on an ear can be part of teething. ?try giving her some tylenol to see if that helps.
  • DS was doing that a few months ago, with no ear infection per the pedi.  He said it was teething.  He finally just got the teeth yesterday/today.  There was nothing showing back when he was tugging his ear.
  • Check for the ear infection, but it's probably teething.  Poor baby.  Much luck to both of you for the next few months.

wanted to add that you may be able to get him in to your regular pedi instead of urgent care.  Ours blocks off time for last-minute "sick" appointments in the afternoon. Our pedi copay is $15, but urgent care would be $50.

  • Im going to go with ear infection.  DD was doing the exact same thing.  She was fussier than usual and wasnt sleeping good.  She only pulled at her ear maybe twice  After talking to my mom, she said she might have an ear infection.  I took her to the doctor and she was right.  I felt horrible because for about 4 days, I just thought she was teething!  She wasnt running a fever or consistantly pulling at her ears and she didnt seem to be in that much pain.

  • Wow, I could have written your same exact post down to the left ear! I didn't know either so I took DS to the pedi this morning and no infection. She said it could be teething, his age, whatever I wanted to call it but he wasn't sick. I feel better knowing though. GL
