dd always used to come into bed with me around 4 am and we would sleep/cuddle until 7 am. she'll be one at the end of the month and she's very mobile in her sleep. I'm terrified of bringing her into bed with me now simply because I'm afraid she'll fall out. how do you guys with older babies co-sleep without worrying?
Re: how do you co-sleep w/a squirmy and active child?
Good question. Jo sleeps with us lately because she's having some sort of night issues, especially at the cottage. But I'm so desperately tired as a result of being kicked, punched and crawled all over during the night. I watched her toss for over an hour into the weirdest positions.
I know she's sleeping. I'm just not. I think I need to start wearing a helmet to bed.
Point her feet toward DH and hope for the best? Just kidding ... sorta.
We have bed rails on the side of our bed not against the wall, so I don't really worry about DD falling out. I guess she could fall off the end of the bed but I've never really found her down there, so I don't worry about that much. I find the higher up in the bed I place her the less she moves. If I put her on top of the covers by our middles she'll stretch across the two of us, flip upside down, etc. But, if I can start her night with her more towards our heads we're generally OK.
Kiddo doesn't move a ton - yet anyway - if he is sleeping right beside me. I have bedrails up but I'm not sure how I feel about that solution since he can easily pull up on them and flip right on out. Fortunately, I've never slept through him waking up and moving around - I guess because I've always slept with him so I'm very in tune with his movements.
Yeah, that was pretty much a non-answer ;-)

i sleep on an air mattress on dd's floor in her room. she sleeps in her crib until about 3 or 4 and then she comes in bed with me. the mattress is literally 6 inches off of the floor, but once she did fall off. i must have been very tired because i am usually a very light sleeper. all of a sudden i heard "ehh...ehhhh....EHHHH" as she was struggling to crawl back up onto the mattress. she was fine, but it was hilarious.
she is a very restless sleeper. honestly, the best way we both sleep is with her on my chest
