I started testing yesterday. I've been eating the appropriate carb allowances for each meal/snack & lots of protein but my numbers are wacky (I test 1 hour after starting meals- doc wants those #'s under 120 which seems low but whatever)!
Yesterday- after lunch: 129, after supper: 148
Today- fasting: 78, breakfast: 128, lunch:151, dinner: 105
I realize this is only one day but at what point did they make you start insulin if you did? I don't see the dietitian again until late next week (I do see my midwife tomorrow so I'll run these by her too). I really hope I don't have to use insulin but these are all over the place- and I've been eating really well (haven't really ate terrible in the first place but definitely cleaned up since GD). Thanks!
Re: GD: Numbers all over the place-can you comment?
Have you tried playing around with the foods that you eat for each meal? For instance, I cannot have carbs for breakfast. It's just not possible. SO, I usually eat a high protein bar, just a lot of ham, or something similar to hole me over. For lunch, I eat a little bit of carbs, and once lunch is over... I make up for all those carbs because it doesn't affect my numbers after lunch time.
It's all about working the system. Try different things out first, and then if that doesn't work... they will put you on insulin.
I eat fewer carbs at each meal than I'm officially allowed. I also moved some of my carb allowances from meals to snacks (which my diabetic educator said was okay to do).
I would try eating all your protein and vegetables before eating your carbs. Eat your carbs last for every meal and snack. That really makes a difference in my blood sugars. Also try eating more protein than you're allotted. When I eat a lot of beef, chicken, or other protein my sugars stay low.
I was diagnosed back in April and I have avoided being put on insulin by playing around with my meal plan.
Also, walking makes a huge difference in my numbers. I can eat the same meal and have my blood sugars go down 50 points or so by taking a walk after I eat.
Good luck!
Wow. Is that what everyone else's target is too? Mine is under 120 at TWO hours after a meal.
My dietician said that it takes up to 2 days for your numbers to get under control, it's not all immediate. And that was certainly true in my case.
I know this probably isn't the best advice since it may go against your diet plan. I add in more protein or meat than suggested in my plan, that's the secret for me to keeping numbers down. For instance, if I eat an order of french fries from a restaurant and order a cheeseburger with full bun and my numbers stay low. It even works if I am at a fast food place, which is very rare but it's shocking it works.
Also, if I do a one hour they want numbers below 140, 2 hour is below 120. Are you sure your doctor knows yhou are doing a one hour draw by telling you he wants your numbers under 120?
That is what mine needs to be... it just means that we have conservative doctors. Each one has their own set of standards, so everyone will have different target numbers, depending on the doctor.
I should add that what I said isn't a typical meal of mine. It just goes to show you with the usually most fattening food how your numbers can stay low with a good amount of protein/meat.
I am having the same issues with my #s
Last night I had a cheeseburger without the bun and split an order of fries with my husband and 2 hours later my #'s were 117. Completely shocked me.
