Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When did you no longer need to put a pillow around your sitting baby?

Sarah sits very well, for the most part, and has been for about probably 6 to 8 weeks now.  But if she looks too quickly in any direction or leans over too far, instead of catching herself, she falls over.  She's gotten better at this, but she's still bonked her little noggin on the floor (there's carpet, but it's not very thick/soft) a few times.

I don't mind this too much at home, but at daycare I know she doesn't get to play on the floor as much as the other babies because someone always needs to be sitting right next to her to catch her if she starts to fall.

At what age did your LO get better at this?  I assume it'll be right around when she starts to crawl but she's not too into that idea so I'm hoping something will click with her before that and her balance/reactions will improve.

Re: When did you no longer need to put a pillow around your sitting baby?

  • We haven't put a pillow around her in ages.  Sometimes she just bonks her head.  Usually it doesn't bother her, but occasionally we need to "awwww" for her.

  • I don't think I ever put a pillow around him. He started sitting on his own at a little under 5 months but bonking his head once or twice (on our carpet) was no biggie.
  • We stopped doing it when D was almost 8 months, but that was also when he started to crawl and also was suddenly able to put himself into sitting position (crawling & putting himself into the sitting position went hand in hand).  D will still occasionally fall over, but not like he used to.
  • We never really did a pillow. We'd brace him for a second or two and if he wobbled our hand were right there, but when he was good and upright we just let him sit. If he turned fast and fell over, we picked him up and that was that. We have carpeting so it was never a big deal. Sometimes he'd lean too far, but he learned.

  • I was going to ask about this today. DS has only been sitting for about 2-3 weeks and we still put the Boppy around him and I sit with him just in case. He rarely falls though.
  • DD was sitting on her own at a little over 5 months.  We didn't put a pillow around her at all.  She rarely fell and now is very steady sitting up.
  • We haven't for a long time. We have tile though so she is never on the floor. She has recently started falling forward so she can scoot so we can't leave her unattended anywhere.

  • I never did it - DD started sitting on her own around 5 months and I'd sit near her and stop her if she was going to fall on somethng hard or sharp, but otherwise, I just let her go.  She still bops her head occassionally - but it normally startles her more than anything and she's gotten very good about catching herself.

  • Now I feel like maybe I should stop putting the Boppy around her so she has a reason to learn to catch herself.  I feel like that's kinda tough love for a 7 1/2 month old, though.  She wails like a banshee when she bumps her head, though (especially when she falls backwards).  I know she's not hurt but she gets scared and I feel bad.  Maybe I will just start putting a regular pillow behind her instead of the Boppy in case she falls straight backwards, but let her alone if she starts to go sideways.

  • I don't really put a pillow on her at home and she bonks her head every now and then. At daycare, I think she spends as much time on the floor - just not sitting - apparently she rolls everywhere is is very much underfoot.
  • He has been sitting on his own for about 6 weeks now and we still put pillows around him just because he likes to sometimes throw himself backwards.
