Buy a Seat for Baby on the Plane?

Peter and I are spending a lot of next summer in Greece.  By then, the baby will be 4 months old....  The flight to Athens will be about 8 hours (we're doing a non-stop).  Do I buy the baby his/her own ticket?  Or do I do the baby-on-the-lap thing?

PS - the baby's ticket would be the same price as ours, $1500...

Re: Buy a Seat for Baby on the Plane?

  • What does the airline say for such long flights?

If I was you, I would prob save the money and just take turns snuggling with the little one.  However I have never been the sole caregiver for a baby for that long.  So maybe one of the mommy's could give better advice

  • when i went to africa i saw people doing the baby in lap for children much older than 4 months. and that flight is longer. if the airline allows it i would but him/her in lap and save the $1500.
  • A lot of airlines will seat you in a row with a little bassinet thing that folds down from the wall so you can put baby in there when s/he is sleeping.

?I saw that on all of my NZ flights this year.?

?Talk to the airline about your options.?

  • For 1500.00, I would rather just have the baby sit on you and Hubby's lap. I know it is a long flight, but the baby will probably not sit in that seat anyway, I would hate for you to buy the seat and the baby not use it. Hopefully the baby will sleep most of the time
  • I say save your money and take the baby on the lap.  Chances are the plane won't be full and you'll be able to move around and sit on an empty seat.
  • My brother and his wife buy a seat for their LO.  My bro is 6'6" so he doesn't have the room to start with and they say she sleeps if shes in her carrier in a seat.  They fly from Hawaii to Ohio (10+ hrs) and the flights out of Hawaii are always full or they would just move around to open seats.
  • I would definitely just hold the baby during the flight.  $1500 is a lot of money, especially if you end up holding the baby instead of using the extra seat.
  • It depends on the airline, but we are flying when the baby is three months old and Air France will give you the bulkhead seat and the bassinet that folds down from the wall for free, as long as you give advanced notice. ?With that said, we think it is the best option rather than paying for the extra seat where the baby would be confined to his car seat for 9 hours, or only our laps for 9 hours. ?This way he can sleep comfortably and we can hold him while he is awake. ?HTH.
  • Before buying I would check with your future pediatrician to see what he or she recommends about flying at that age.  Bart's cousin tried to fly here to Chicago from NC when her baby was that age, and the ped gave her a firm no because of the cabin pressure and spread of germs on airlines.  It would be worth investigating...

It is not advised but not prohibited and you just have to take extra precautions. ?Since DH's family is in Romania and mine is in the US we don't really have much of a choice, and our family doctor was okay with it and just told us to avoid unnecessary travel. ?He will check out the baby right before the flight and gives us steps to take to ensure a safe and easy flight. ?After discussing it with him and making our appointment for his passport, we've booked our tickets for next March.

There is a 2 week age restriction on airlines.?

Definitely ask about the bassinet row.  Also, be sure to request it in advance.  A friend of mine flew to Korea in May with her baby and used this feature.  She told me that she saw a family request the bassinet row when the got on the flight (not in advance) and they wouldn't grant them their request.

Also, my friend said her baby slept pretty much the whole way - from Dallas to Seoul.
