Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Feeding Question- bite sizes?

DD just turned 12 months. We are still cutting all her food up into small pieces. I see some people are feeding toast and bagels. Are you tearing them up, or giving them whole to the baby, and letting him/her take their own bites? I don't think DD is ready for that yet, because she still stuffs so much in her mouth that she chokes if we let her, but I was curious about others.

Obviously I know things like grapes and hot dogs and such need to be cut up, I'm talking about less "chokeable" foods.

  • I have to cute everything up.  My DD also stuffs all of it into her mouth until she can't anymore.  It scares the crap out of me.

  • Glad to know Addie isn't the only vacuum cleaner around here. Lol.

Your DD is adorable! I love her name too. Olivia is on my list in case we ever have another DD.

  • For us it really depends on the situation.  If we are feeding dd on the go, we will giver her a something to hold and nibble on (a piece of bread, etc) but if we are sitting down at a high chair and table we will cut things up for her and allow her to eat off a fork or self feed w/ her fingers.  BUT, this is b/c dd has lots of teeth and has shown us that she won't stuff her face and gag.  I think it just really depends on the kid, kwim?

  • We still cut everything small - blueberries in half and everything else pretty small. The only thing I let her hold and bit is a ritz cracker.
