Help...my mom wants her wedding rings back...

When I moved out 5 years ago, I asked my mom if I could have her wedding rings (my mom and dad divorced when I was a year). I always liked them, and she said okay. So she calls tonight and asks if I have them, I guess she forgot she said I could have them. But she wants them back because her friend got 700 dollars for her scrap gold, and my mom wants to do the same. She doesn't understand why I want to keep them and wants them back. I don't know what to do.

  • If she said you could have them they are yours, and probably of sentimental value.  Afterall they represent the love that brought you into this world.  I would just explain to her your feelings (whatever they may be) as to why you don't want to give them back.

  • Did she give them to you to use or to hold onto?

If you are using them then that would be a little strange and rude. But if you are just holding on to them for her then I would see no reason not to give them back to her.

    Maybe you could explain more?

  • "Oops, sorry mom. I must have misplaced them. I'll look around and get back to you...sometime..."

  • Can you just pay her for them?  Then you get to keep the rings and she gets the $$$ she's after.  Win/Win.

I thought she gave them to me to keep. They just sat in her jewelry box. I wear them from time to time.

Strange. If it's for money then I would give her the money and keep the rings; if you can. That's a strange situation to be in... :(

this. my mom gave me her old set that looked like the set she had when she married my bio dad. if she asked for them back now she would be out of luck. they are mine.

if she pitches a fit, offer her $500. maybe then she will realize how stupid she is being.

  • I would take them to a local jeweler who is buying gold (they usually pay more, from what I understand), find out what they would give her for them, and then ask her if that is worth selling them, even though you have an emotional attachment to them.

If she says yes, offer her the same amount that the jeweler would have paid. She's your mom, she might even be willing to take it in installments.

Thanks guys...I know money with her is tight right now, maybe if I could find that out, I could give her installments (can't afford a lump sum :( ) They do mean a lot to me.
