Does anybody know (Metformin question)

if it's okay to take your metformin pills all at once? ?Or should you take them with each meal (i.e., 500mg at breakfast, lunch and dinner to make a 1,500 mg daily dosage). ?

The way my RE explained it to me, it sounded like I was supposed to take them all at once, around dinner time, but now I'm second guessing. Does anybody know??

  • It's fine to take them all at once if you like.

  • I take 1000mg, but on my pill bottle it says to take one pill twice a day. So one in the AM and one in the PM. I know a few girls take 500 in the AM and 1000 in the PM. If you experience s/e with them, it will help to space them out a bit.

It should tell you on your pill bottle. You can also call your doc for clarification.

  • My RE told me to do whatever works for me,so I take one right before lunch and one right before I go to bed.  Two at once would have been fine too though.
  • Okay - thanks all. ?So far no unpleasant side effects from taking them all at once (I'm on 2/day but working my way up to 3/day next week). ?Knock on wood.
  • I take all of mine at the same time (right now I'm taking two, next week I'll start with three), per instructions from my RE.

  • It depends on which kind you are taking. The regular ones need to be spread across the day (3x a day) while the Extended Release need to be taken all at once (3 pills once a day).

  • From what I've been told, if you're on the ER (extended release) version, you should take them all at once... I take mine at night before bed.  If you're on the normal version, I think you're supposed to space them out somewhat equally... so that it's slowly put into your system, but I'm sure if you can handle it all at once you could do that too.  The ER is supposed to have less side effects since it's slowly released into your system, like you'd get from spacing them out without actually having to remember to take them 3x a day.  HTH!
