Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Have solid issues help.

Are some LO's just not good eaters?  J is just not interested at all.  I thought he was getting better but the past two days he won't even open his mouth.  Some days he is all about it but mostly he's not.  Most days he won't even open his mouth but for maybe 1 or 2 bites.  Is he just not ready?  Should I keep trying or give it up and start back in a few weeks?

Re: Have solid issues help.

  • what is he eating, when, before or after bottle?

  • We've just been doing dinner.  He usually wakes up from his nap at 3, gets a bottle, and then at 5-5:30 ish we do a fruit or veggie.
  • Let me add I also tried doing solids in the morning when he is in his best mood and it was no different.
  • hm, don't know.  lol.  Shane has absolutely no interest in cereal (but can you blame him?!?) but I can't get carrots or bananas in fast enough.  he could care less about squash some days though.

  • oh..but I wouldn't worry about it too much.  he's still getting used to it and right now, it's not his main source of nutrients anyways.

Oh I know I think it's me thats just dissapointed he's not into it. lol.  He'll get it eventually.  I gave him a pickle to suck on yesterday though and he was loving it!

  • Why did you give him a pickle?

I would just hold off on solids. If he's not ready... he's not ready. He will be soon enough.

  • He's still very young and might not be ready for it. You might want to take a week off and then try again.

  • My DS was not a good eater until about a month ago.  He just absolutely did not want anything to do with it.

I would say that you should keep offering.  Make sure you sit his high chair at the table when you eat.  I think that's really important.

But yeah, he is still young, so it's not a huge deal.  Just don't lose hope.

Because I let him taste different foods.

  • yep, after almost 4 months of solids, C is not interested. ?Just keep at it the best you can.
  • I did cereal at around 4.5 months a handful of times..sometimes he took it, sometimes not. Closer to 6 months he became more interested and in the past week or so he has been very open to every food we have tried. Little guy probably isnt quite ready and I wouldnt push it until about right at 6 months.
  • I'd wait until that rash clears up before offering anything else... especially something like a pickle!

  • Everyone mentions this site, but it really does have good info even if you're not making your own baby food.  www.wholesomebabyfood.com

DD didn't get solids until 6 months, and it took her nearly a month to figure out how to swallow.  She's still a very picky eater now.  We keep trying different fruits and veggies to find ones she likes.

  • Thanks for all the advice.  I never force it on him.  If he takes it he does if he doesn't he doesn't.  I just tried pears and he took almost the whole container.  I honestly just think he's a picky eater.

Julia it's been 2 days since I gave him any solids and the rash was gone the same day.

I'll just give it time.  If he's not ready he's not ready but I will atl east offer them to him.

  • A pickle because you like him to try new foods? The acid in pickle juice is terrible and can cause dispaer rashes, not to mention the sodium content in the juice...
Not a good idea. Try an apple, avacado, bananna.

  • EFLO, I wouldn't give him a pickle again. ?They have a high sodium content and no baby needs that. ?If you want him to try new foods, stick to things that are more bland: avocado, banana, apples, pears, peas, winter squash, sweet potatoes, etc. ?Take a trip down the baby food aisle for ideas.

Or, go to the site that SarahMay suggested for more information on how to introduce your baby to new foods. ??

Last, if he's not getting the hang of it, he's probably not ready. ?He's only 5 months old. ?Try again in a week or two and see how he does.?
