headrest on Graco Snugride

Do you have to keep the headreast thingy snapped on when your LOs get bigger?  When he was a newborn it snuggled him in, but now he is 7 months old and it just seems like it's in his way.  Not sure if it's necessary for safety reasons.

    we have a chicco, but took out the infant insert around 2 months.
