3rd Trimester

How many onesies, sleepers, etc.?

We don't have laundry in our apartment (though it's in the building) so my instinct is to really stock up on things like onesies, blanket sleepers, rompers, etc. that we'll need to change frequently, mostly in the 0-3 and 3-6 sizes. I have found Ebay is a particularly good resource for this Smile  But, I don't want to go overboard! Any thoughts on (roughly) a good quantity for these items?

Re: How many onesies, sleepers, etc.?

  • That's tough.  I don't think anyone can have too many plain white onesies.  We used those a LOT with DS.  Same thing with the thin cotton sleepers.  I can't even say how many times I had to change DS's clothes, especially in the begining, because he drooled milk or spit-up or had a diaper accident.  Even as he got older those things happened.

I wish I could give you a number but I really have no idea.  DS wore preemie clothes for a bit at first because he was too tiny for the newborn size.  After he his 3-6 months or so, he blew through sizes.  But the white onesies I had lasted quite awhile.

  • I agree with PP, you will go through what seems like a weeks worth of clothes in about two or three days.  Spit up, explosive diapers, and a spilled bottle, forget it, you both will go through lots of clothes changes.  (If you are formula feeding, make sure you know that it will stain your clothes, so don't wear anything you are attached to for feeding time, or at least have a light robe to throw on over your clothes. )  My son also wore premie clothes for a while, then newborn, then 0-3, so make sure you have some tiny stuff for the first few weeks.

Maybe stock up on onesies and sleepers, and receiving blankets. If you get what would seem to be enough for two weeks, then you can do wash once a week and not be in a crunch.

  • It's funny because all the newborn and 0-3 month stuff usually says 5lbs and up.  That's crazy talk, because DS was 6 lbs 12 oz and he literally swam in everything that we had.  We never expected that, and he was full term.  Now I recommend to everyone to have a couple of preemie clothes on hand just in case.  Not everyone will need them, but it's hectic when you do and don't have them!

  • How often can you do laundry?  I would get TONS and TONS of burp cloths.  I go through those like there's no tomorrow....I get the large prefold cloth diapers.

I go through 1 or 2 onesies/rompers a day, but my DS doesn't have blow-outs.  I'd say expect to have 15 onesies for the week.  We swaddle DS at night so he goes to bed in a onesie, so we don't overheat him.  He wears sleepers during the day a lot...and we're good with 1 a day.

Receiving blankets...you really don't need a lot.  We use them over and over again until they get spit-up on (which rarely happens).  I'd say get a couple packages of the large ones (the small ones are a waste).

Thick blankets are nice for tummy time, especially if you have hardwood floors.  We put receiving blankets over the blankets to avoid washing them a bunch due to spit-up.  I wouldn't worry about having more than a couple until winter time, then you can decide how many more you'll need.

Since you aren't washing stuff frequently, be prepared for stuff to have stains.  That stuff needs to be soaked immediately to avoid this.  I would try to wash as soon as you can. BTW - OxiClean works great for stains, don't bother with the Dreft stain remover.

  • Here is what I have right now with a notation under each size if we plan to get more.

Preemie (we have small babies in the family and they grow slowly): 3 cotton, footed sleepers, 1 long sleeved onesie, 3 white short sleeved T-shirts (these are really NB size, but they're Gerber, which I hear runs small). *We plan to buy one coming home outfit in Preemie too (we'll take one Preemie and one NB outfit with us in the bag- just in case).

Newborn: 25 short sleeved onesies, 1 long sleeved onesie, 4 footed sleepers (2 are cotton, 2 are terry), 3 ensembles (outfits with more than one coordinating piece).  *We are looking for T-shirts, but we've  had a hard time finding them!

    0-3 sizes: 9 short sleeved onesies, 4 sleepers (3 cotton, 1 fleece), 3 ensembles

3-6 sizes: 7 short sleeved onesies, 3 long sleved onesies, 1 zipper sleeper (so it could be used much earlier), 2 ensembles

We also have ONE Swaddleme to try out and 9 receiving blankets.  And probably 10 pairs of socks.  We will buy another pack of white socks (none of what we have are white).  We also want to grab a few gowns with elastic at the bottom and we need some pants... we don't have hardly any pants at all.  (just one NB pair of cotton- everything else is a material that wouldn't be super comfy for long periods)

We can do laundry as often as we want, but it involves going downstairs to the laundry room... so I imagine we'll want to keep it to once a week if possible. Thanks for the tip on the stain remover, we'll get some to keep on hand!

Thanks for all of the suggestions, ladies!
