3rd Trimester

Anyone consider not having their water broken?

I've been reading alot of this lately. I really like how it may help with pain control (because the baby's head is cushioned for longer) and also the decreased risk of infection (even though this doesn't happen often). I'm completely willing to have an epidural, but I figure if I can hold out that much longer, or possibly not need one at all, then that would be great. Obviously this may not happen in my situation and I still need to talk to my OB about it to make sure the hospital will be willing (whatever OBs on shift when I deliver will be there, unfortunately).

Just wondering if anyone else had given it any thought.

Re: Anyone consider not having their water broken?

  • I JUST posted my birth story - I think it's on the second page by now - and I delivered my baby without having my water broken.  I think it made a very, very fast/intense labor more tolerable.

  • There are very few conditions under which I'd allow AROM.  In general, I think the more hands off, the better when it comes to labor and delivery.
  • If you are getting an epidural do you need to have your water broken?

    No.

  • I did not have to have my water broken with DD #1 it happened on its own at some point during labor at the hospital (its all a little blurry now) and I will resist it being broken unless there is good reason only because I do not want to be put "on the clock" and have to deliver by a certain time.
  • I'm going to avoid it unless completely necessary, because once the membranes have released the increased risk of infection tends to make the hospital staff put the laboring mother on a timetable to "get things going."  I'm hoping for a med free birth so it's important to me to be able to labor for as long as possible my own way, without the timetable.  So unless my OB thinks it's ABSOLUTELY necessary to my health and/or the baby's health, I'm going to decline it.
  • My water was broken - our son's heartrate was getting erratic, so the doctor decided to do it to get the labor moving faster. At that point, because my body was not cooperating and LO was going to be in distress, it was best for our situation.

Note: It kinda sounded like a little "pop" when the doctor did it. I was more freaked out by the idea of it, but there was no pain.

I just read it and I find it very encouraging! Congrats!!

  • I absolutely don't my water broken, even if I don't go med free.  24 hours after your water breaks (or possibly sooner) you will likely be forced into an induction or c-section.  The risk of very serious infection goes up after that, it's not something you want to mess around with.
  • I will not allow it unless I am presented with an acceptable reason.
  • Mine was broken with DS, but I think it had to be.  I had been in labor for quite awhile and it was just barely two hours or so before DS was born that they broke it.
  • i am requesting that they not break my water

It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one. I hadn't heard much about it on the boards over the last few months and was starting to feel wierd about asking my OB about it, especially if it was uncommon.

  • I am requesting to not have my water broken, but if I am not progressing for a long time and it becomes a choice between Pitocin or breaking the water, then I will choose the latter. ?

  • Nope, I would not like my water broken. If something goes wrong and it becomes absolutely necissary then it will be up for discussion...otherwise, I would like it to burst on its own.
