Infertility

Really?

So, my current boss (I start my new job after next week) is also a friend/mentor since I've known her (and worked for her) since I was an undergrad.  She knows all about our IF and is usually very supportive.  This morning I was in her office and said "Wow, I must have eaten something that didn't agree with me yesterday...my stomach feels icky".  To which she immediately replies "I hope you don't think you're pg.  Even if you are, which you probably aren't, it's WAY too early for symptoms.  You don't have symptoms unitl you're at least 10-12 weeks in.  And I hope you're prepared to do several IUI cycles...the first one will not work."

Indifferent

I think she's angry and hurt that I found a new job and that's part of the problem, but wow.  This is coming from a 49 year old woman with a third grader and kindergartener who had several abortions because her husband (who is 12 years older than her) didn't even want kids (though now he is a FABULOUS father) and she was afraid to tell him she was pg.

I just turned around and walked out of her office.  What do you even say to that?

Re: Really?

  • Wow!! I have no idea what you would say to that.  She sounds like she is bitter.  It must be because you found a new job. But that still doesn't give her the right to talk to you like that.

    I am so sorry.

  • OMG - what a horrible thing to say to someone!!!  It sounds like she may be bitter that you are moving onto greener pastures with your career.  Maybe it's a good thing she won't be your boss anymore - I would have a hard time looking her in the face ever again, much less have respect for her!

I'm sorry you had to hear that today.  ((HUGS))

  • Holy cr*p.  Inappropriate does not even begin to describe her comment.

You handled it perfectly, and I would agree with the pp's comments that she is probably bitter that you are leaving.

Good luck with your new job!!

  • she is probably mad you are leaving...maybe thinking that you still owe her something because she is your mentor? I wouldn't say anything because you may need her in the job world in the future and if you start a fight right before you leave it could end up breaking all ties.
