There's been a few posts lately about these with mixed reviews. We signed up for a session, and our first session was today. We're Y members, so it cost us $15 for 4 thirty minute sessions beyond our membership fee. Overall, I was pleased with session 1 of 4. The point of these lessons for us is to get him in the water more and around other kids near his age, not to learn how to swim. There were 4 kids in the class, so it's a good size IMO.
The had us try to get our LO's to float. Great for toddlers... not so much for my 11 mo old, but not too bad. Then try to kick. Again, great for toddlers, not so much for B. The class is for 6 mos-36 mos, so I would imagine this is a difficult range to "instruct."
Good things: going down a small slide into the water. B LOVED it. Sold me on getting him a slide for his birthday. Singing a few songs and bobbing into the water. He liked this too. For my money, I'd say it'll be a good class.
Re: ymca swim lessons
I took A to the one up here in Dayton when he was 7 mos. but all they did was sing songs and practice jumping in the water, which since he was just starting to crawl was a little hard for him, but he loved it none the less. He had been in a pool before too. I skipped the lessons this summer, but think we'll do them again in the fall. He has been in the water a lot this summer and is such a water bug. It is all I can do to stop him from trying to swim out on his own.
I second the slide completely! I really wish I'd gotten A one earlier than a month ago. Babyage.com had good deals on Little Tykes climber ones. Glad your LO is enjoying the water!
