Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Exciting! FYI: happy birth story

I figured I'd bring some cheer into this room for those that need it.  My sister works in labor and delivery as a nurse.  She was working her regular routine night shift when a full term pregnant lady came in.  She was only 1 cm dilated.  My sister calls the drs and they are all home and don't think they need to come into the hospital when the patient is only 1 cm.

So 30 mins later the women is in extreme pain and my sis checks her and now she is 6cm! She calls the drs, and they say they are on their way to the hospital.  My sis checks the baby's heart rate, sadly it was dropping.  It should be around 130 bpm and it was close to 50bpm.

The baby was delivering so fast that it was going into shock. She had a choice to save the baby by giving the women medicine to stop all contractions or wait for the dr and risk a still born.  She really didn't want to do give the medicine! It would be alegal because the dr did not give the order.  My sister is still alone and no drs are in sight! Other nurses crowd the room ready to assist.

My sister then checks the women again, fully dilated and the baby is thankfully crowing!  This is the very fist time that my sister had to get suited up and get ready to catch the baby. She explained that there is no time for pain medicine, no time to wait for drs, deliver now!  With a few pushed the baby was out and entirely blue, not breathing.

My sister and the 3 other nurses got the baby breathing and the color immediatley changed to pink and he started screaming.  Yeah!  The heart rate went back to being normal when the dr finally raced into the delivery room.

Even though I recently m/c I still love it when she shares these exciting stories with me. :o)
