Anyone have a DC that is really interested in TV?

Any other tv households out there?

We're not a no TV household. At the same time, I don't want Sabrina watching much tv. As far as actually sitting and watching, that's reserved for 10 minutes a couple times a week to distract her enough so I can cut her nails. Or the rare occasion where she just needs a few minutes of downtime. Then we usually have on Backyardigan or Sesame Street...something with singing.

But otherwise the tv is typical on in our house, and it's a flat screen mounted on the wall so it's hard to miss. Lately, she's very interested. Like if I block the tv she's trying to look around me to see it. It doesn't last long, but she's totally interested. I mean, Paula Deen IS interesting, but I don't want her that into TV.

Is it something I should be restricting now? This morning she was overly interested in the weather report so I turned it off. I *think* she's just interested in the colors more than anything, but who knows.

My SIL has a no tv household with the kiddos so she doesn't see any during the day. Interestingly enough, I don't have it on during the one day a week I work at home. It's just when we're all home. DH and I like our TV on. I don't see that changing....

  • We are a TV household, we love TV.  N likes it sometimes, she'll watch Mickey mouse clubhouse, and sometimes little einsteins...but for the most part we watch what we want and she isn't interested.  I remember her being really into it when she was about a year old, like she all of a sudden realized it was on.  But now she couldn't care less, every once in a while she likes the commercials but only if it has a lot of music or dogs in it.

  • Crash watches Backyardigans.  He doesn't really pay much attention to it most days.  Every once in awhile I will see him watchig something on Discovery with his Dad.
  • We are a TV house. Lexi has allways been interested in it, and i kinda embraced it. She loves movies, and has a good collection. I dont think its prevented her from learning anything, and in some cases i think it helped  lot. She could sing the little songs from the shows and everyone always complimented her knowledge and her imagination. Orion has very little interest in TV, he just now is barely watching anything.

I do control how much she watches and its allways educational. except for Spongebob, because thats the BEST CARTOON EVER!

  • We are a tv house. E used to watch everything on tv which worried me. But now when it's on, unless it's one of *her* shows she doesn't really pay attention, unless it's something like SYTYCD where there's music and flashing lights and lots of movement.

Now, I have to admit, I put on Curious George or Sesame Street quite a bit these days if I have to cook dinner or really just need a break. I'm over the guilt of using the boob tube as a babysitter.

  • We watch the boob tube, more than I'd like to admit.  I have a rule that I'm trying to stick with - we must be dressed and ready for the day.  It's either Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or a Disney movie.  DH and I are huge Disney fans and so we have quite the movie collection.  I try to keep it to a show or two in the morning while I'm getting ready for the day and sometimes one while I'm making dinner.  Our mornings are pretty busy and we're usually out of the house, so I don't feel too bad about it.  However, she'd sit in front of it all day if I let her.  I don't watch my shows while she's awake, though.  I like crime drama and that doesn't mix with kiddos.
  • I'd classify us as a TV house too.  If it's on, we keep it relatively kid-friendly.  either PBS/Sprout stuff or sports.  The one thing that we're sensitive to is when we're watching sports and violent commercials come on.  DH or I will often try to distract Nick or jump in front of the TV if something like an Extreme Fighting commercial comes on.  Or a scary movie commercial.

For the amount of time he watches it versus the time he's out & about, playing, running, etc., I'm not concerned.  And he will often abandon it and play on his own anyway.  Especially his new favorite game "Really Big Bunny!!" which involves jumping up and down on the couch while he says "Nick a really big bunny!!".  Yea, love that game...

  • we only have one tv, but I have it on when I'm downstairs for noise mostly.  Marin LOVES to watch Gilmore Girls (as do I also,) but honestly, when it's on, she'll play in the living room and every once in a while pause to look up at the screen.  I think because it's a sound she knows (she perks up at the intro song every time) and it's colorful, that's her draw... But she'll also zone on Shawn the Sheep if it's on too.  I worry about it, but honestly, I'm only in the living room with her for about an hour or two each day... I do worry it might be a habit for toddlerhood though.

  • She likes Sesame Street, namely Elmo's World, and Barney (but really only for the intro song and she is PUMPED!  and then she will sort of watch, but rather play.)  The only adult show she has watched has been Oprah, everything else, she pretty much ignores.
