Whole Milk given to a 9 month old?

Our pedi said we can start giving our 9 month old whole milk.  I thought they weren't supposed to drink milk until 12 months.  Was anyone else told this?

Re: Whole Milk given to a 9 month old?

  • We were told at our 9 mont appointment to start after our 12 month appointment or shortly before it.

  • We were told to begin whole milk as long as we were not substituting a feeding and she has not had an issue w. yogurt or cheese....so far so good... we give it in a cup with breakfast ... 2 oz. a day approx.
  • We haven't had a 9mo check up yet. However, at our 6mo my dh asked this ? and our pedi told us no milk until 12mo.

  • I was also told at the 9 month appt that I could give it to him, but not to replace feedings with it.  That said, he has only had a sip or two when I was drinking some myself, I am waiting until 12 months to really give him his own cups of it.

It's not a "no no" like honey. It's something they CAN have, as long as they're not missing out on any formula because of it.

  • DD just had her 9 month appointment and we were told specifically no milk until 12 months.
