Preemies

What formula is your preemie on

I have twin preemie girls and they were both on Enfamil Enfacare, but one of them was having stomach cramping on it and diarrhea so the pedi just wanted her to switch for a week so he put her on Enfamil Nutrimagen.  So far I see its working she is sleeping and I don't notice her in so much pain.  She is 4 months old and I am just so worried that he will switch her back because he wanted to keep them on the Enfacare until they were 6 months because of all the nutrients and the high calorie.  Just wondering your experience with switching formula I wnat her to keep gainign good weight and I have read Nutrimagen isn't that great like its made with a bunch of oils and has MSG.  I

  • Not sure what GA your preemies were, but mine was 34 weeks, 4 days and she was only on Enfacare until she left the NICU (13 days).  We were able to switch her to regular Enfamil, but then had to do Enfmail AR due to spitting up excessively.  That didn't work, so she is now on Enfamil ProSoBee.

She weighed 4 pounds, 6 oz when she was born and exactly 5 pounds at discharge.  She weighs about 12 and a half pounds now but is 26.5 inches long.

  • I forgot to add that their GA was 34 weeks and 5 days.  Very close to yours SWMcFarland. And the twin I am switching the formula on she was born weighing 5 lbs and 1.5 oz and now weighs 12lbs 8 oz. 22 inches
  • Now he's just getting expressed milk, but he was on fortified milk with Nutramigen formula.   I don't know a lot about it but it seemed OK.
  • Lily HATED the Nutramigen.  We actually tried this before trying the ProSoBee, and I have huge regrets.  She REFUSED to take a bottle.  It was a miserable 4 days.  (Pedi said give it 4 days).  From now on, I'll go with my gut instinct on this kind of stuff because I wanted to try the soy all along.

I do 7-8 oz of ProSoBee with 1.5 tbs of rice cereal mixed in.  We also started oatmeal and several solids.

    Oatmeal was our lifesaver!

  • Robbie is on Good Starts: Natural Cultures.

We've tried: Elecare, prosobee, neosure, nutramigen, nutramigen AA, and alimentum. Everything made him heave like a volcano.
  • DS was on Enfacare for 2 months.  He had good weight gain (3lbs. the first month home) so the pedi said we could try regular formula and come in for a weight check in 3 weeks.  DS continued to gain weight well, so we stayed with the regular formula.  Eventually, we switched to Costco brand in order to save some cash.
  • My DD was on 22cal Neosure to fortify my EBM, now on 24cal Neosure. She likes it fine and has been on that brand since the NICU.
  • My 34.4 week twin girls were on NeoSure for a few weeks and by our 2 week apptment the Dr told us we could also try Enfacare and gave us a ton of Samples.  once we finished that we switched so around 3 weeks they started on Smiliac Advanced.  The preemie formulas seemed to make them so gassy and stinky!  The pedi was fine with it.  By two months they were both at 10.8 and 10.9 lbs so the pedi agreed that they didn't seem to need the extra calories.  They said they did like to keep them on it until their due date plus 6-8 weeks past that.  Now we switch between SimilacAdvance, GoodStart Natural Cultures and Enfamil Premium.
