~*~*~ PCOS Check-In ~*~*~

This is a list of women who are dealing with PCOS. Anyone can join in, so let me know if you want to be on this list! We can keep track of everyone?s cycle, offer advice, and support for each other. We check in every Tuesday and Thursday, and the check-ins can always be found in the PCOSbio.

Good luck and lots of sticky baby dust to everyone!

Let us know how you are doing. If you have any questions for the group to answer, feel free to ask.

QOTD: Question from brenorrn - What questions to bring to a first time RE visit for PCOS? (person not ovulating on own, cycles are have been up to CD 100, IR, U/S shows "string of pearls", Testosterone is semi-high, acne)

Re: ~*~*~ PCOS Check-In ~*~*~

  • QOTD:  I would ask about Met right away.  With all the research that supports its use and the potential benefits all around, I would request to be put on it.  When I go for my second opinion, I'm also going to ask if they could differentiate me from typical PCOS, because I think I'm more on the Hirtuism end...I want to know what that means for me and if it's contributing to my problems.

UPDATE:   Beta is tomorrow, but I tested negative yesterday morning at 9dp5dt.  I'm not too hopeful. Just want to know the results so I can move on.

  • I would like to join.  Went off BCP in Dec 08 with no periods after tht but wasn't planning on starting TTC until June 09.

After two losses, third time was a charm.

  • Started spotting yest cd 24 & AF arrived full geared & ready today CD 25 which is 5 days earlier than last month GREAT. Calling RE today for CD 2 baseline u/s tomorrow.

QOTD: I was told my ovaries looked like "pearls" too. That's so nice isn't it. Yes I would start Met not only because of PCOS but for the IR too.

  • Gringa: What do you mean your more on the Hirtuism end? and why do you think it would contribute to your  problems?

The reason I ask is b/c I have hirtuism but am still on BC and won't know about my cycles till I go off the pill in Jan.  Is there are reason to think that the hirtuism leands to more problems then any other PCOS?

  • QOTD- I agree with pp. Ask about Metformin.

As for me. Had an appt with my RE yesterday and set up an new plan. Once next cycle starts (taking provera next week). I'm starting another round of BCP and having my HSG done. Praying that turns out okay. If all is well we'll be moving on to Gonal F/Ovidrel/TI. RE doesn't think we need IUI at this point. I guess that's good news. We'll see.

  • Today I am 10dpo / 9dpIUI. I cannot test (HPT) until at least Monday - 6 days past last my last HcG booster shot. I really thinking I may not test at all myself. Time will tell. Beta is schedule for next Friday 8/14. I've got a big suprise planned for DH on that day - to either celebrate my BFP or just to appreciate him for dealing with me on all this craptastic drugs. He's my hero and the suprise planning as served as a distraction, if nothing else.

QOTD: I agree with PP about requesting Metformin. It should help with some of the weight loss but it won't do anything to help the acne and high testosterone. Since coming off BCP a year ago, my skin has been tollerable (most of the time) but certainly not as clear as it was on the pills. None of the stimming, cycling, or medications in general have helped with that. My only advice is to drink lots more water and never go to bed w/out washing your face. GL @ your 1st appointment. After baseline u/s & b/w they'll probably start you cycling on Clomid. By itself, Clomid didn't help me ovulate but that's where all the RE's seem to start. Also, my internist has me testing my blood sugar every morning and periodic testing of my HbA1c. If these numbers are high, the RE won't touch you... just an FYI. Uncontrolled IR/Pre-Diabetes can cause spinal malformations in fetuses. It took me 5 months to get my numbers in a positive range before I could even start cycling.

  • I'm doing good. Had an appointment with my RE yesterday and was told I'll need to have my uterine polyp removed. Having the hysteroscopy done on the 28th.

I don't really have an aswers for the QOTD b/c I didn't know I had PCOS until I went to my RE.

  • Good morning, ladies!  I'm doing good today, but I don't really have anything new to report.  My first week of Met is going well.  I up my dosage tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes.  I've also already lost some weight, which makes me happy.

QOTD:  I don't have any experience in this area.... good luck with your RE visit though.

I'm not sure that hirtuism causes more problems than PCOS, I just think it might need to be treated differently (e.g., meds).  Up until now, I have had no androgen/testosterone testing and my acne has not improved, telling me that I still have excess androgens despite all the fertility meds.  I've been on Bravelle for all my cycles because I'm ovulatory, but I'm not sure it's necessarily the right drug.

How were you diagnosed with hirtuism? I'm meeting with a new RE on Tuesday, and I'd like to suggest some more testing.

  • Prometrium seems to have restarted my cycle on CD 24, which is REALLY early for me.  This will be my first full cycle with treatment, so I'm anxious to see how that goes.  Another appointment with doctor on Tuesday and will get bloodwork results whether I am Insulin Resistant or not.  I would love to find something to help me drop this extra weight though.  (About 15-20 lbs)

QOTD:  I haven't gone the RE route yet.  Working with my ND (Naturopathic Doctor) who diagnosed me, after bloodwork and ultrasound confirmed.

  • QOTD:  I went to an older male RE and was told I didn't have PCOS because I didn't have the classic "string of pearls" look.  I explained that from what I had read that it wasn't an all-or-nothing disorder... you can not have the cysts but still have PCOS.  He wasn't having it... I think he was just a little too stuck in his ways.  I switched RE's and found a great middle-aged female doctor who seemed a little more informed.  I didn't tell her anything from my previous RE visits, just said that I'd like to have a full blood work-up done and told her my symptoms, etc.  She dx me with PCOS and I just sighed THANK YOU!  I knew I had it, but wanted someone to see it for themselves too!  She started me on Metformin a month ago and that's been going well so far.  Lost some weight for the first time in years.  I've literally just been stuck at one weight forever no matter what I tried.  It's a huge relief!  Good luck!

  • I am doing alright. I think I ovulating some time this week, but nothing too sure right now. My body likes to play tricks on me.

qotd: When I first went to the doc, I brought almost a year's worth of charts, almost all annovulatory, including one extremely long cycle (140+ days), family history of diabeties, abnormal hair growth, and adult acne. It was with that, b/w and an u/s that I was diagnosed by my RE.

  • Thank you ladies, this board has been a life saver!  Wishing you all good luck the rest of the week!  :)
  • CD19  - 1dpiui

i'm super crampy from the iui - but at least the o pains are gone.  I think i  may have released on both sides depsite my underdog eggs this cycle, and dh's sperm had fantastic counts 78mil post wash (i was blown away, and of course he just had to ask what it was pre, and it was like 160mil, it made him feel studly lol), my CM was perfect, and tuesday was our 3 year wedding anniversary.  soooo i'm hoping these are all very good signs :)

now. . .hoping i fit into my bridesmaid dress saturday Embarrassed

qOTD - i also brought over a years worth of charting when i went to the RE.  i was diagnosed w. pcos when i was 16 so i realyl didn't have many other questions.  i agree about asking about met - make sure that they do a glucose tolerance test...  recent studies have shown that MET has no positive effects on women who are not IR or diabetic.  I'm hypoglycemic so i would get  no benefit from it . . . i say why torture yourself if it won't help -- but of course that is all up to your own personal comfort level and how your RE feels about it

  • Hi ladies.

ME: Tomorrow is CD 16. Go back in for b/w and u/s. Hoping like crazy that I have a follie ready to trigger and we can get IUI#2 scheduled already.

QOTD: I would definitely ask about Metformin given all of that. Sounds similar to my story. I don't ovulate or menstrate without medication. I had cystic ovaries, high testosterone and acne. I was only borderline IR though. But I will say I've been on Met for maybe two years now and I don't know that it honestly has helped my PCOS any. My new RE said they are starting to think that it isn't as helpful as they once believed. But I still take it. Others believe Met was what made the difference when they got their BFP. So it could just vary.

    Good luck to you all.

  • Howdy! I've lost count of what CD I'm on. lol Stopped taking BCP Sunday after taking them for 9 days and have been waiting for AF to show up ever since...I think she is just around the corner....just like I've been thinking for the last three days! lol Once this cycle starts we will be gearing up for injectibles and hopefully IUI #1.

    GL to everyone! :)

  • Doing pretty good here...nervous though because I have my Beta IN THE MORNING (11dpO)!!!! EEEEK!!!!  This is my first cycle to O on so, I am being more optimistic than I should.

I keep thinking I have pg symtoms but I know it is all in my head probably!

I really want to POAS in the morning but DH is afraid we would get a false positive bc of my hcg trigger.  So...I guess I will just have to wait and see what the RE says.

  • I test tomorrow (14dpoIUI). Right now I don't really feel any pg signs, but I know that not everyone has signs. I really hope that it is a BFP and if it is not then we will deal with it.
