Need support today

I am really scared of the dentist, and today I have to get my wisdom teeth out. All 4. I have TMJ so my jaw is really tight (trouble openening wide) and I am stressing about this whole thing. They say I will have about 5 hrs or so of a completely numb mouth and tongue and can only eat very soft things for a while, and of course no sucking through straws, etc.

Many people have had this done but I am still scared. I require nitrous oxide even for a regular cleaning.... Thanks guys. My appointment is at 8am!

  • Good luck today!  We'll be thinking of you :)

FWIW, when I got my wisdom teeth out, it was not anywhere near as bad as everyone would make you believe.

  • GL!  I am putting my wisdom tooth removal until absolutely necessary due to similar (but not as severe) fears.  At least you get to eat lots of pudding!

  • Are they going to sedate you? If so you aren't going to remember anything! Remember you never hear the good stories about people getting their wisdom teeth taken out, only the bad ones. Just know that most cases go very smoothly, you'll be a little sore for a few days but by about a weeks time out you'll be back to completely normal.

  • ((hugs)) I hear you!  FYI I had my wisdom teeth out and it wasn't as bad as they said!  It will be ok!  And think about how much better you'll feel when it is done!

  • Good luck :)

My mom has/had TMJD.  She's 43 and has had 30-40+ surgeries :  I can't remember how many anymore.  Several implants, some recalled.  No clue why she went that route though.

Anyhow, wisdom teeth are nothing :)  I've had 2 of mine done, no problems & wide awake.  I need the other two done, but that'll happen as finances allow.  My insurance will pay for it, but the only doc that takes it requires that I be put under (read: money hungry), and I'm not okay with that :  So I declined.

  • Are you scheduled for/can you request IV sedation?  I insisted that if they were going to reach inside my head and rip four bones from the very core of my being, that they would want me sedated before the procedure.

That stuff is amazing.  If you can get it, please do.  It'll make your experience so much easier.

    ((hugs))

  • I do NOT like the dentist. I don't have panic attacks but I have a lot of mouth issues (poor gum issues that I seem unable to correct, TMJ etc) that make my visits pretty unpleasant. I had to have a couple filling replace when my TMJ was at it's worse once so I really feel you on the unable to open your mouth wide enough thing. I'll tell you this - having my wisdom tooth out was probably one of the easiest things that I had done. My mouth was totally numb when he did it so the only thing I felt was him fooling around in there. I really don't remember it being all that painful afterwards either but I'm sure I was on something.

(((hugs))) I'll be thinking of you!

  • Good luck today! I got all four of mine out in Jan and it was a whole lot better than everyone made it sound. And the pain medication wasn't too bad to have for a few days!

  • i'll be thinking of you. it shouldn't be that bad

TMI --- my DH had his wisdom teeth removed recently, and the thing that troubled him the most was actually constipation the week after. This was due to (1) pain meds, (2) lack of his usual activities, and (3) lack of fiber in his diet. So just a word of advice, try to get some oatmeal, banannas, or other fiber in there, and walk around a little each day to keep things moving. And of course, only take the meds as needed.

Salt water rinses will also make a world of difference.

    Good luck!

  • Definitely have them put you under - I don't remember a thing!  There is a bit of pain afterwards and the not eating thing is annoying, but the actual procedure was no big deal since I was completely out.

It's just like labor stories...people like to tell the horror stories and you rarely hear about the good ones.  Good luck.

  • Good luck!  I'm sure it will go smoothly and you'll be right as rain before you know it.  And...ice cream is a soft food.  You'll have to eat some.  :)
