So we ahve a new little one coming soon and camera just decided to give out on us- we got a nikon cool pix 2 1/2 years ago and are really unhappy with it .We would like the next one we get to last longer than 2 years!!!
What kind of camera do you have?
How long have you had it?
Pros? Cons?
Video feature?
Re: Recommend your camera
I have a Canon Rebel xTi. Pros...allows me to shoot manually and get creative. Also takes many pictures in succession without lag. Cons...no video and is large. However the pros are so worth it to me. I've had it 18 months or so.
I own a Nikon D40 and D300 - I have a few different Nikkor lenses. My default lens is a Nikkor VR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G.
I am a photographer. So I use the D300 for pro and the D40 for just fun pics. The D40 is awesome. The kit lens is fine and the price is right. You can get amazing photos of your child with it. In good light or appropriate settings you can get the shutter to move almost 3 frames per second, so you can get some great candid snapshots.
I'd HIGHLY recommend the D40 over a point and shoot. You'll be amazed with the quality of photos. Here is a link.

DSLRs (except a few) do not have a video feature and the screen does not show the photo (you have to look through the viewfinder) because there is only one lens in the camera (hence, single lens reflex).
Some new DSLRs now do have the option to view what you are seeing through the viewfinder on the screen (which I think is somewhat awkward while using a DSLR) and take video ... however, you'll have to fork over A LOT of money for that feature. I have a point and shoot (Canon Elf) that I keep in my purse ... and I use for videos. And, I use my DSLRs for photos.
Here are two shots from my D40.
