We're not looking - we bought two years ago. We wanted a formal dining room and did not want a pool. We do not have a formal dining room, and we have a pool! We loved the house and made compromises!
Great school district was a must. And we only looked at houses with at least 4 bedrooms and finished basements. We need ROOM!
While we were ok with houses we could update and work on, I absolutely was not willing to buy a house with a kitchen that needed remodelling. No way was I gonna live through a remodel. Also nixed immediately, were any houses on busy streets.
Hypothetically speaking? I want 1) a house on deep water with a dock. 2) lots of room (inside and out). I don't want 1) a newly built house. 2) a move-in-ready house.
Ideally, these will be the criteria when we move from this house (we've only been here a year), but I don't know if we'll be able to afford a house on the water!
We just bought our house at the end of June. The top two things were large rooms, at least 4 bedrooms and a large kitchen that was not galley style. I got all three!!

We just moved into our forever house a couple weeks ago. Our top two things were 4 bedrooms and a family room/game room. We did not want a really formal dining room (we have a dining room, but it's not formal) and we didn't want a huge yard (something big enough for kids, but not something so big that we would always be doing yard work.
Top 2 wants are a big yard and nice neighborhood. I don't like small yards and neighborhoods that are unkept. I like it when the neighborhood takes care of their houses and everything is neat and orderly!
Want: hardwood floors, big back/front yard, oversized 2 car garage at least, good storage, at least 4 bedroom, acreage
Do Not want: 2 Story, Small kitchen, 'cookie cutter' type house, close to neighbors
We will always buy for location before the house though.
We just bought a second house that is 2 stories and in a housing development so 5 houses down there is one identical to ours. Oh well, we're keeping my one story house.
We moved into our new (first) house back in November. Our MUST HAVES were the # of bedrooms/bathroom and the fact that it was 'move in' condition (whatever that means according to us). We definitely did not want a pool
A master bath with a DOOR between it and the master bedroom, a toy room, a huge kitchen, an idland in said kitchen, concrete counters in said kitchen, no carpet downstairs!
Ugh, I cannot wait to start building. Too bad the city has laid off half of its workforce as well, this permit is taking FOREVER.
1. Bathrooms - we needed two toilets (don't care about much else in the bathroom, lol.) When we were remodeling the main bathroom and only had one toilet in our master bath - it was torture
2. a non-piggy-back drive way - when we lived with MIL we had one long drive way and had to move cars every time someone needed to go somewhere. very annoying, especially in the winter
If I had to do it again I would not have gotten a house with wall paper thinking I'd take it down, no big deal. 2.5 years later the stupid ugly paper is still up in most of the house.
2. a non-piggy-back drive way - when we lived with MIL we had one long drive way and had to move cars every time someone needed to go somewhere. very annoying, especially in the winter
We have a long skinny driveway and it is so annoying. I take the car in the back all the time...we don't have DH's car and my car anymore..they are both community vehicles!!! Oh yeah, I drive over the grass if someone else's car is in the way. Can't wait to add another lane (or whatever it is called) but in the meantime we hate it!

Re: lets talk about something fun...buying a house

DMoney will be a kickass big sister
we are doing this now!
the things i MUST have:
kitchen eating area
gameroom
formal dining room
things i do NOT want:
a small kitchen
anything less than 4 brs
Hypothetically speaking? I want 1) a house on deep water with a dock. 2) lots of room (inside and out). I don't want 1) a newly built house. 2) a move-in-ready house.
Ideally, these will be the criteria when we move from this house (we've only been here a year), but I don't know if we'll be able to afford a house on the water!
Top Two Wants: Our small price range and more than 2 bedrooms
Top Two No's: needing tons of work, in the city (horrible schools & taxes)
We're hoping to close on our house August 14th....we're so excited!
what I got:
1. acreage
2. large master bedroom (i need a get away spot)
What I wanted but couldnt get:
vaulted ceilings, awesome master bath, fireplace
do not want:
2. ranch style house, I grew up in one and have always wanted an upstairs
3. neighbors!
Top 2 wants are a big yard and nice neighborhood. I don't like small yards and neighborhoods that are unkept. I like it when the neighborhood takes care of their houses and everything is neat and orderly!
(1) Good neighborhood in a good school district.
(2) Good layout. You can change paint and flooring, butyou can't change layout.
If I can have a (3), I'd want a big yard for this and future children and lots of light throughout the house.
(1) A cookie-cutter McMansion on a postage-sized lot, with my neighbor's bathroom window 3 feet away from my house.
(2) A condo
My nascent blog

Do Not want: 2 Story, Small kitchen, 'cookie cutter' type house, close to neighbors

Top two things I want: Plenty of storage and a nice kitchen
Top two things I don't want: Too many levels and choppy floor plan (if that makes sense...I'm tired
)
I have so many wants!

Must-have's:
(1) hardwood/tile/natural stone flooring
(2) somewhere to park our boat
Do not want:
(1) this goes with #1, above, but I do not want any wall to wall carpeting
(2) busy street
We have a long skinny driveway and it is so annoying. I take the car in the back all the time...we don't have DH's car and my car anymore..they are both community vehicles!!! Oh yeah, I drive over the grass if someone else's car is in the way. Can't wait to add another lane (or whatever it is called) but in the meantime we hate it!
We are looking right now, but what we want is probably way different than what others would want.
We want - land and solid foundation.
We don't want - neighbors that are too close or small rooms.
We had a bunch of wants and don't wants, but some of the big ones:
Wants: At least 4 bedrooms, a good sized lot, minimum 2 car garage, finished/finishable basement, open floor plan, office, fire place
Don't wants: First floor master bedroom, ranch style house, formal living room, lots of renovation necessary
