Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How much fussiness is "normal"?

My sweet, peaceful baby has disappeared and I am now faced with a little one who is fussing every minute that she is awake.  She absolutely will not be content anywhere but in my arms when she is awake.  I can't put her in the swing, the bouncer, or anywhere else without her starting to cry immediately.  Even when holding her she sometimes cries/screams.  I do have a sling that she enjoys most of the time (and falls asleep in).  But I was wondering if this fussiness is normal for a 4-week old or if I should be looking for a reason that she is fussing so much.

I have also tried Mylicon drops for gas and just started reading "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child".

Any tips, advice, ideas, or words of encouragement?

*ETA:  I don't think it's a growth spurt because it's been going on for over a week...

  • I'd speak with the pedi only because with Jake we assumed it was colic and held out a month for a regular pedi appointment. He decided to treat Jake for reflux for a week and see if things improved and now I have a child that is really only super fussy for an hour or so in the evening. I wish I'd spoken to him sooner.

  • You could just be in that phase where there fussy starting at 4-9 weeks. Some babies it last shorter then others. Gas could be it too. Its really hard to say with a LO that young.
  • My LO is the same way and I'm going to the pedi's tomorrow and I plan to ask.If she isn't alseep or eating she is screaming and crying. I feel sorry for her becuase I'm not sure what it is and I don't know what to do but try and rock her back to sleep.

  • OMG...I think our DD's are twins! Even born on the same day! This is EXACTLY what I'm going through. DD is gassy, but it doesn't seem to bother her b/c she doesn't pull up her legs and scream...she seems to pass gas pretty easily. However, my pedi switched us to Enfamil Gentlease and it doesn't seem to be helping...but it's only been since Friday. I just tried switching from Dr. Brown's to Playtex Drop-ins to see if that makes a difference. She screams unless I'm holding/walking with her. The minute I put her down she screams. She was SO EASY the first 2-3 weeks...I think I jinxed it by saying that too!! I feel horrible b/c I"m not even enjoying her as much as I did the first few weeks :(
